Education Graduate Student Awards & Fellowships

McGill's Faculty of Education is proud to offer annual awards and fellowships to graduate students within its three departments, thanks to generous donors who support the Faculty's research and teaching priorities. 

The recipients of these awards and fellowships will be determined through competition at the Faculty level. It is the responsibility of the student applicant to fill out the application form and compile their dossiers. Departments will verify student eligibility, complete the administrative sections of the application form, and transmit applicant dossiers to the Office of the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate S. Applications will be adjudicated by academic members of the Committee on Graduate Studies and make recommendations to the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation who will then select the award recipients.

Only applications from graduate students within the Faculty of Education are accepted and are ranked based on:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Research Potential and Professional Accomplishments
  • Strength of Research Proposal
  • Presentation of Application

Opening Date: February 5, 2024

Deadline for Departments to Receive Applications: March 1, 2024

 

Balyta Family Fellowship in STEM Education

Established in 2021 by Dr. Peter Balyta (B.Ed. '94, Ph.D. '07) and Mrs. Ann Balyta (B.Sc. '94).

Eligibility: Open to Master’s students (entering or continuing).  Granted based on academic excellence to a full-time Master’s student pursuing research in STEM education. Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

Value: 2 awards of $5,000

 

 

 

Dr. Gauri Shankar Guha Award in International Development Education

Established in 2003 by Dr. Ratna Ghosh in her late father’s name to recognize an outstanding graduate student pursuing research in international development education.

Eligibility: Open to Master’s and Doctoral students who are conducting fieldwork. Granted based on academic excellence. Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

Value: 1 fellowship of $7,000

Herschel and Christine Victor Fellowship in Education

Established in 2000 by Herschel Victor (B.Com. '44), for an outstanding graduate student in the Faculty of Education.

Eligibility:  Open to Master’s and Doctoral students.  Granted based on academic excellence. Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

Value: 1 fellowship of $11,000

 

Jackie Kirk Fellowships

Established in 2009 by Andrew Kirk in memory of his wife, Jackie Kirk, for outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Education.

Eligibility: Open to Master’s and Doctoral students.  Granted based on academic excellence. Preference will be given to those students whose research has a focus on any one or a combination of the following: post-conflict education in developing countries, women teachers, and girlhood studies. Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

Value: 2 fellowships of $7,850

 

    Jackie Kirk Fieldwork Support Fund

    Established in 2009 by Andrew Kirk in memory of his wife, Jackie Kirk, to recognize students in the Faculty of Education conducting fieldwork.

    Eligibility: Open to Master’s and Doctoral students who are conducting fieldwork. Granted based on academic excellence. Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

    Value: 1 fellowship of $7,000

     

    The Muriel H. Marsh and Harold A. Marsh Endowment

    Established in 2018 by a bequest from Katherine Mary Eaton Marsh (DipEd '42) to support in-course scholarships, fellowships, and projects.

    Eligibility: Open to Master’s and Doctoral students. Granted to outstanding graduate students working on projects on children with special needs. Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

    Value: 2 awards of $4,000

    The Stansfield Award for School-Based Classroom Research

    Established in 2000 by a bequest by Ellen Edith Grubb Stansfield (B.A. 1929, M.A. 1931, in recognition of her experience, leadership, and interest in education in general, schools and classrooms in particular.

    Eligibility:  Granted based on academic excellence to a full-time graduate student whose research focuses on schools and classrooms and who is in the beginning stages of their thesis program (currently in their first year or entering their first year). Two applicant dossiers are accepted per department.

    Value: 1 award of $1,000

    Walter A. and K. Mary Marsh Fellowships in the Faculty of Education

    Established in 2009 by K. Mary Marsh in memory of her husband, Walter A. Marsh, for outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Education.

    Eligibility: Open to Master’s and Doctoral students.  Granted based on academic excellence to graduate students who have demonstrated leadership qualities. Preference will be given to Master’s and Ph.D. students conducting research with a focus on teaching. Four applicant dossiers are accepted per department; two Mater's and two Doctoral.

    Value: Master's fellowship of $8,000 and Doctoral fellowship of $12,000
