McGill attained a Platinum Sustainability Rating in March 2024, the highest achievable under the sustainability rating system administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

McGill's current rating is Platinum (86.26 points).

McGill aims to become zero-waste by attaining a diversion rate of 90 percent, based on the internationally recognized standard.

McGill's current diversion rate is 45%.

McGill aims to become carbon neutral by net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through large-scale transformations and offsetting difficult to reduce emissions only when necessary.

Vision 2020 Climate & Sustainability Action Plan 2017-2020

Vision 2020 Climate & Sustainability Action Plan laid out a framework for achieving the highest possible standards of sustainability on our campuses. The actions were structured around five categories: Research, Education, Connectivity, Operations, and Governance & Administration. 

    Vision 2020 Sustainability Action Plan 2014-2016

    McGill’s first Sustainability Action Plan was able to bring a wide variety of campus players together to tackle our sustainability challenges. It succeeded in scaling sustainability initiatives upwards and outwards, providing a strong framework for future projects. 

    It was approved by McGill's senior administration in March 2014 following a two-year community engagement process.
