Biography: 

Dr. Luis Souhami who retired in December 2023, was a Professor in the Division of Radiation Oncology, Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology and had served as its Associate Director from 1992-2020.  In addition, he was a radiation oncologist at the McGill University Health Centre and is a member of the American Society of Radiation Oncology. Dr Souhami played a very important role in the development of stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastases and in the introduction of 3D conformal radiotherapy and high dose rate brachytherapy in Canada.

Dr. Souhami received his medical degree from the Escola de Medicina e Cirurgia de Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1972. He then completed postdoctoral training as a medical intern at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and his medical residency at Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland. Following his residency in radiation oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, in 1979, he worked as a fellow in radiation oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. From 1980 to 1987 he worked at the Instituto Nacional de Cancer do Brasil where he was head of the department of radiation oncology from 1981 to 1985. 

Dr. Souhami was invited to speak at numerous conferences in North America and around the world, has more than 287 peer-reviewed publications, 40 book chapters and is co-editor of a textbook on radiation oncology (Radioterapia em Oncologia, 3rd edition). He serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals and is a member of numerous professional organizations.  He has been a visiting professor in many countries, including Brazil, the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Ecuador. Among his awards are the Gold Medal awarded by the Brazilian Society of Radiotherapy (Sociedade Brasileira de Radioterapia) in June 2011; the Gordon Richards Lecture, at the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncologists in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in September 2011; Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology in Miami, Florida, October 2011; Keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of Quebec, June 9, 2012. He also received the International Recognition Award in radiotherapy from the Society of Neuro-Oncology of Latin America in March 2016; the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology Research or Clinical Service Award in December 2013; was inducted into the Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, in October 2018; and received the Cedars Award of Merit and Recognition for outstanding leadership in oncology in 2021. In May 2023, he was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil.
