C. Procedures for Continuation or Readmission following Unsatisfactory Standing not related to a Field Placement

Note: Requests for continuation or readmission following Unsatisfactory Standing not related to a Field Placement are normally addressed by the Director of Internships and Student Affairs


The guidelines presented below are designed to make procedures for readmission transparent to and efficient for all parties. Requests for Readmission or Continuation are normally addressed by the Director of the ISA for the Faculty of Education. In the event that the Director of the ISA is unable to render a decision, the request may be referred to the SAC.

1. Appeal to Continue following Unsatisfactory Standing

Preamble: A teacher candidate who falls into Interim Unsatisfactory standing in the Fall term, is normally allowed to take courses in winter. They will be removed from the program after the winter term if they fall into unsatisfactory standing. Techer Candidates who fall into their first Unsatisfactory standing in winter are sometimes exceptionally allowed to take the 6 credits in the summer term at McGill University. A teacher candidates who falls into Unsatisfactory Standing due to academic performance may submit an appeal to continue at the end of the term; however, their request will only be considered when proof of extenuating circumstances that affected academic performance can be provided (e.g. medical note, etc.).

To make an appeal to continue, a teacher candidate should:

  1. Send their request by email to isa.education [at] mcgill.ca with the following information in the subject line: AppealtoContinue_Firstname_Lastname_McGillID
  2. Address the request to the Director of Internships and Student Affairs
  3. Provide a one-page personal statement that provides a clear and compelling explanation of (a) the extenuating circumstances that led to unsatisfactory standing, and (b) how those extenuating circumstances have been managed to ensure they would no longer impact the teacher candidate’s achievement if permitted to continue.
  4. In the case of medical explanation, a teacher candidate must provide medical documentation confirming that they are able to continue full-time studies (Healthcare/Mental Healthcare Provider Approval Form).

2. Request for Readmission following Unsatisfactory Standing – First Time

Preamble: A teacher candidate seeking readmission after falling into Unsatisfactory Standing for the 1st time must successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits (two courses) at another university and receive a minimum grade of ‘B’ on both courses (according that university’s grading system). Courses taken should demonstrate your ability to be successful in your field, and, therefore, should be applicable to your program of study. For McGill courses' equivalencies at other institutions please consult the online Course Equivalency tool. Please note: A request for readmission will not be considered without an official document. To make a request for readmission following the first time in unsatisfactory standing, a student should:

  1. Send their request by email to isa.education [at] mcgill.ca with the following information in the subject line: ReadmissionRequest_Firstname_Lastname_McGillID
  2. Address the request to the Director of Internships and Student Affairs
  3. Provide official documentation attesting to the completion of 6 credits (2 courses) at another university with a grade of B or higher.

3. Readmission Following Unsatisfactory Standing – 2nd Time or more

Preamble: A teacher candidate seeking readmission after falling into Unsatisfactory Standing for the 2nd time (or more) must successfully complete a minimum of 18 credits (six courses) at another university and receive a minimum grade of ‘B’ on all courses (according to that university’s grading system). Courses taken should demonstrate your ability to be successful in your field, and, therefore, should be applicable to your program of study. Applicants seeking readmission after a second instance of Unsatisfactory Standing will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and a follow up meeting may be required prior to a decision being rendered. To make a request for readmission following the second or more time in unsatisfactory standing, a teacher candidate should:

  1. Send their request by email to isa.education [at] mcgill.ca with the following information in the subject line: ReadmissionRequest_Firstname_Lastname_McGillID
  2. Address the request to the Director of Internships and Student Affairs
  3. Provide official documentation attesting to the completion of 18 credits (six courses) at another university with a grade of B or higher.
  4. Provide a one-page personal statement explaining how the circumstance(s) leading to the repeated unsatisfactory standings have been addressed to ensure that the teacher candidate will not fall into unsatisfactory standing again.
Rendering a decision

Following an evaluation of the request for readmission following unsatisfactory standing not related to a field placement, the Director of Internships and Student Affairs will render one of the following decisions:

  1. READMIT: If it is thought that there are sufficient grounds for readmission or continuation, to readmit the student;
  2. REJECT REQUEST: If no compelling evidence is found, to reject the request for readmission or continuation;
  3. DEFER: (i) To defer a decision until further information has been provided; or (ii) to defer a decision until a meeting with the teacher candidate and/or other involved parties may be called

Teacher candidates will be notified in writing within 14 days of the request. Please note that failure to provide all required documentation may delay the decision.
