Funding, Scholarships and Awards

Financial Support

Every graduate student in Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences should have financial support if he or she does not have independent funds. This support can be acquired from a variety of sources such as fellowships and studentships, lab demonstratorships, or from the research supervisor's grant funds.

Fellowship and studentship competitions are held annually and are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Most of the deadlines for the federal and provincial agencies are in the fall for tenure in the following year. The major funding agencies include CIHR, NSERC, FCAR, and FRSQ. It is important that all prospective students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada explore all sources of aid available through public and private agencies.

Additional information about funding can be obtained from the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.

International students admitted to McGill University must have financial support before coming to Montreal. Prospective students are urged to make every effort to secure funds from sources other than McGill. Opportunities should be explored through established agencies in their own countries, as well as agencies that fund international students to travel abroad through competitions.

For example, the Commonwealth Scholarship Plan provides opportunities for students from Commonwealth countries to study in other Commonwealth countries. The World University Service of Canada (WUSC) provides funding through competition for students from many European countries. Possible funding from McGill includes the Graduate Faculty Awards competition and the McGill/CIDA competition for students from developing countries.
