McGill University has been training leaders in dental medicine from Canada, the United States and other countries for over 100 years. The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences' General Practice Residency Program is the largest in Canada with a current enrollment of 21 residents. Throughout the one-year training program, residents will be exposed to a broad multidisciplinary approach to clinical practice.

Overview

Our dental clinics are located at three sites in Montreal, of which two belong to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).

Clinic locations:

Residents train at one site with rotations throughout the year. The program is comprised of 52 credits and begins on July 1 and finishes on June 30 of the following year.

* The Certificate in Craniofacial Orthodontics is currently not being offered.

Objectives

The General Residency Program provides recent dental graduates with a broad multidisciplinary approach to the clinical practice of dental medicine. The residents are under the constant supervision and guidance of members of the attending staff.

The program:

  • gives residents a full exposure to all aspects of clinical dentistry and to all types of patients, from the medically-compromised to those seeking implant-supported prostheses and cosmetic dentistry;
  • provides trainees with additional hours of chair-side clinical teaching;
  • allows residents to continue their theoretical and scientific knowledge through an extensive series of lectures and seminars.

The hospital teaching staff is comprised of general practitioners and specialists in Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. Other specialists in Oral Pathology and Radiology are available for consultations. All clinical teachers hold appointments in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences.

The General Practice Residency Program is accredited by both the Ordre des dentistes du Québec and the Canadian Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be issued a certificate recognizing successful completion of a Multidisciplinary Residency Program in Dental Medicine.
