This pathway aligns with the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences' 5-Year Strategic Plan (related to equity, diversity and inclusion) and the University’s Action Plans to Address Anti-Black Racism. Historically, Black peoples have been excluded from healthcare professions and this is a way for the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences to establish equitable processes that show we welcome students identifying as Black.
The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences seeks to increase the representation of Black applicants admitted to its Doctor of Dental Medicine Program (D.M.D.). A specific selection process has therefore been established with the goal of facilitating the admission of qualified Black students aspiring to pursue a career in dental medicine and oral health sciences. There is no limit in the number of seats for admission through the Black Candidate Pathway (BCP). All candidates who apply through this pathway will be simultaneously considered in the general Quebec resident cohort and may receive an invitation to interview through either pathway.
As the Faculty does not have a separate applicant category for Black students, we encourage all applicants who self-identify as Black to notify the Admissions Office by selecting "I wish to be considered" for the Quebec resident Black Candidate pathway on their Academic History Workbook (item #2). This will allow their application to be evaluated through the BCP selection process, with their consent. Self-identification and participation in this pathway are optional and would in no way negatively impact the admission decision.
Requirements
- Self-identify as Black.
- Have a minimum cGPA of 3.4/4.0 or higher.
- Meet all the academic and non-academic requirements for admission to the DMD program
- Submit your application by November 1st and required supporting documents by November 3rd.
Required documentation
Candidates who self-declare as Black will be required to submit, by the November 3rd deadline, a personal statement to contextualize their life experiences. A checklist item will then be added to their Slate account allowing them to upload their personal statement once completed.

Selection Process
Admission into the DMD Program involves a holistic assessment approach that takes into account academic criteria (minimum cGPA of 3.4), non-academic criteria (CASPer) as well as life experience (personal statement and CV). The personal statements will be assessed by Black community members and health care professional admissions file reviewers. The candidates endorsed by the file reviewers will proceed to the Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMIs). The offers of admission will be based on the performance at the MMI within the Quebec resident cohort.
