How do I advertise a position to students?

There is no charge to post job postings in our online job posting system (myFuture). You can post the jobs you want to fill on our website at the http://www.mcgill.ca/caps/fr/employers/hire. Below are instructions on how to post jobs for McGill students and alumni. All employers are invited to post their job vacancies on our website themselves.

Please be aware that we ask employers to include their website in the company listing, so that McGill students and graduates can obtain information about companies that post positions on our website. We also ask employers to use a professional email address when registering, and that we do not accept registrations from companies that use generic email addresses such as Gmail, Hotmail, etc.

Please note that we no longer post any unpaid internships or volunteer opportunities, within for-profit organizations. Internships in the for-profit sector must be paid at least the Quebec minimum hourly wage. In addition, we do not post any volunteer opportunities for organizations that charge participation fees to students.

We are in the long process of translating the job posting software, we hope that the translation of the system will be done as soon as possible and we apologize for this inconvenience.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help you.

Can I hire a student if that student does not take part in the internship program?

Yes, students get to decide if their summer work experience will count as an internship.  You are welcome to hire their either way.  But note that we cannot create tax documents for students who do a summer position outside the McGill program.

What about international students?

Nearly all international students have a full-time work permit associated with their study visa - valid for any academic break (including summer).  These permits generally do not allow students to work full-time during the academic year.  Generally, international students can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year.

What is the internship program?  How does the internship program work?

I can provide that for you. Make the request here. (Note: I cannot create this for you after your last day as a student at McGill. So, if you are graduating soon, plan ahead.)

Do I need to do anything special if a students tells me they want to receive internship credit for the experience?

In short, we ask very little of work supervisors.  We ask that you sign a contract, fill out a mid-term and final evaluation, and perhaps be available to meet with the Internships Officer if they are in town.  In general, we try to make hiring a McGill intern an easy task that doesn't add to the company's workload.

Are internships always done in the summer?

Most students do internships during the summer, but there are always a few students who take the semester off to do a full-time internship in the fall or winter. Note that a full-time internship during the fall or winter is likely NOT possible for international students as study visas generally require that students maintain a full-time status.

What is the minimum internship length?

10 weeks long, 35 hours/week (full time). Or equivalent.  (There is no maximum.)

I don't have funds to pay my intern.  Can I ask my intern to apply to McGill (or elsewhere) to secure their own funding?

Our funds are designed to cover the costs that students might incur when doing an internship - transportation to the internship location, lodging, food, some specialized gear, etc.  But we do not fund things that are usually provided by the employer.  Ex. software to do the work, computers or gadgets, lab supplies, etc.  Which is to say, while we provide funds to students, the types of things we fund are things that employers do not usually provide.  Which is to say that our funding cannot be used to help pay for research or other work being done by an intern.

Does FAES consider a research internship to be a valid internship?

Yes, research is a career, so yes. in nearly all cases, students are working with a professor or graduate student to support the research of the professor/grad student.

Note that one cannot do an NESRC funding project at McGill and count it as an internship course. Or any other research program that appears on a transcript. In short, each activity should only be listed on a transcript once, so we don't allow anything that results in one experience being counted twice.

Is McGill on the official intern/coop list?

YES, see list here.  https://www5.psc-cfp.gc.ca/coop/noitcatlusermargorphcraeswohs.do
