Applying to Nursing

The processes for applying for admission to the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN) differ based on bachelor (undergraduate), master (graduate) and doctoral level program requirements.

UNDERGRADUATE

During their clinical placements, students often need to communicate with healthcare staff, clients and their families in French. Proof of French proficiency is required for admission to our Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. More details can be found here:
French Language Proficiency and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. (N.))

The Ingram School of Nursing calls for and develops skills and qualities essential to the Nursing profession, amongst them: technical knowledge, critical thinking, empathy and strong communication skills. The minimum grades, prerequisite courses and additional test requirements for admission to undergraduate Nursing programs at McGill are outlined at mcgill.ca/applying/requirements. In addition to these existing specifications, a new expectation is French language proficiency.

In the clinical settings where much of our program delivery takes place, the ability to communicate proficiently in French is necessary to effectively learn and safely work with and support patients, families and healthcare teams. French is essential to the successful completion of this Nursing degree program.

Please visit  https://www.mcgill.ca/applying/nextsteps/documents/additional#PRFP to review the criteria to meet the French proficiency requirement.

Please go to takeCASPer.com to sign up and reserve a test date using a piece of government-issued photo ID.  Detailed information regarding the CASPerTM test can be found on the link below.

Required Immunizations

Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin obtaining the required immunizations in January, as this process can take up to six months. Students who have accepted their offer of admission on Minerva must upload the completed immunization form directly to the Student Wellness Hub, by June 15th. The immunization form can be found here; for information on this program requirement, please review the Ingram School of Nursing’s Clinical requirements web page and contact the School for any questions. Students who have not completed their immunizations by the deadline will be forced to defer their admission for one year.

CASPerTM Assessment

CASPerTM, the Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics is a web-based situational judgement test designed to evaluate key personal and professional characteristics essential for students to be successful in nursing school and ultimately, as practicing nurses. Some of these characteristics include professionalism, empathy, compassion and cultural sensitivity. Since CASPerTM assesses non-cognitive and interpersonal characteristics, studying is not required.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to secure technical requirements including a reliable internet connection on their selected test date. No exceptions will be made for applicants who are unable to take CASPerTM online due to unreliable internet connection caused by technical or political factors. Applicants may want to explore details of the requirements and the structure of this assessment takecasper.com.

Please go to takeCASPer.com to sign up and reserve a test date using a piece of government-issued photo ID.

On the website:
· Click on the Dates and Fees tab
· Click on Browse dates
· Step 1: Select Canada
· Step 2: Select your language*
· Step 3: Select Graduate Nursing
· Step 4: Select McGill University

The list of dates will appear once you have made these selections.
*It is important that you take the test in the language you are most comfortable expressing yourself.

You will be provided with a limited number of testing dates and times; these are the only testing dates available for your CASPer test as no additional tests will be scheduled. Please use an email address that you check regularly, since there may be updates to the test schedule. You may direct any inquiries to: support [at] takecasper.com or via online chat by registering on the CASPer website.

The CASPer test is composed of 12 sections of video and written scenarios. Following each scenario, you will be required to answer a set of probing questions under a time constraint. Each response is graded by a different rater, giving a very robust and reliable view of personal and professional characteristics important to our program. You may want to familiarize yourself with the test structure at takeCASPer.com, and ensure you have access to a quiet environment in which to take the test. CASPer test results are valid for one admissions cycle; applicants who have already taken the test in previous years will therefore be expected to re-take it.

We have many inquiries about our program so have tried to summarize key information about our science admission requirements in this section. For complete information on our admission requirements, please consult the Undergraduate Admissions Guide.
