Convocation Ceremonies were held on the lower campus for the first time since the 1960s.

The Board of Governors was reduced from 45 members to 25 voting members and 2 non-voting student observers.

Social Equity and Diversity Education Office established.

Gold medals were won at the Torino Winter Olympics by Jennifer Heil BCom’13 and the Canadian women’s hockey team, including McGill members.

Canada wins women’s hockey Olympic gold at Torino, with McGill team members.

Jennifer Heil BCom’13 won a Gold medal at the Turin Olympics.

Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) established.

Professor emeritus Charles Taylor BA’52 receives the Templeton Prize, celebrating scientific and spiritual curiosity.

“History in the Making” McGill launches a $750-million fundraising campaign, with $325M already raised - co-chaired by Senator Michael Meighen BA’60, LLD’12 and Yves Fortier BCL’58, LLD’05.

McGill wins first national championship in women’s hockey

Peter Cundhill BCom’60 established at McGill the world's largest non-fiction historical literature prize.

The clock at the Roddick Gates was repaired, and bells chime for the first time in 75 years.

McTavish Street, between Sherbrooke Street and Dr. Penfield, became a pedestrian zone; parking on the lower campus was eliminated.

David Johnston LLD’2000 fourteenth Principal and Vice-Chancellor became Canada’s 28th Governor-General and Visitor of McGill University.

Canada won the women’s hockey Olympic gold in Vancouver, with McGill team members.

Institute for Global Food Security, Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, in 2018 renamed Margaret A. Gilliam Institute for Global Food Security.

Redbirds baseball won the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association Championship in 1994, 2006, and 2010. The team was established in 1895, disbanded in 1939, and revived in 1994.

 

 

2011

McGill had the largest computer cluster in Quebec and the second-most energy-efficient data center in Canada.

MBA categorized by the Ministry of Education as “specialized” with an international focus program, operating on a self-funded basis

MUNACA members went on strike, from September 1 - December 5.

On November 10, fourteen students occupied James Building's 5th floor, and riot police called to campus and clashed with students.

2012

“Maple Spring,” Quebec student protests, resulting in provincial roll-back of tuition-fee increase announced earlier in the year.

School of Nursing was renamed Ingram School of Nursing.

112 students and graduates have competed in the Olympics over the past century, winning 30 medals: nine gold, eight silver, and 13 bronze.

Honorary doctorates conferred on Principals of Glasgow and Edinburgh universities, in recognition of McGill’s Scottish heritage.

Trottier Institute for Science and Public Policy was established.

McGill won the first national championship in men’s hockey.

 

 

2013

Mid-winter flooding of campus from the McTavish Reservoir

$43M budgetary shortfall due to government funding cuts.

The Board of Governors approved: the revised Student Code of Conduct; and Statement of Principles Concerning Freedom of Expression and Peaceful Assembly.

The “History in the Making” campaign attracted $1,026B from 95,619 donors for 600 student bursaries, scholarships, fellowships, and awards, and 46 faculty chairs.

“Aspire Food Group” MBA students won the $1M Hultz Prize, for cricket protein food.

Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics & Mental Health established in partnership with Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, Douglas Hospital, and Jewish General Hospital

“Food for Thought,” McGill’s first offering with Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) attracted 32,000 people from 160 countries.

McGill Chaplaincy Service was renamed McGill Office of Religious and Spiritual Life/Bureau de la Vie Religieuse et Spirituelle.

McGill mace, a symbol of the University’s authority to confer degrees, presented by Sir Timothy O’Shea LLD’12 Principal, University of Edinburgh.

Canada won the women’s hockey Olympic gold at Sochi, with McGill team members.

Faculty of Dentistry’s consolidated its operations and units at 2001 McGill College Ave, with research and biomedical labs remaining at the Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building.

John O’Keefe MA’64, PhD’67, DSc’15 was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, and the tenth McGill professor or graduate to win a Nobel Prize.

McGill University Centre (MUHC) at the Glen site opened with the move of Royal Victoria Hospital, on April 16, and Montreal Children’s Hospital, on May 24.

McGill Space Institute furthered Montreal’s emergence as a leading hub for space research.

Justin Trudeau BA’94 became the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada.

 

 

2016

The Board of Governors adopted a policy on Sexual Violence.

The bookstore was renamed Bookstore/Librairie Le James, with new locations.

China replaced France as the second largest source of international students. The USA continued providing the largest contingent.

Tanenbaum Open Science Institute, Montreal Neurological Institute, established.

Canada First Excellence Research Fund awarded $84M over seven years to support neuroscience at McGill.

Faculty of Religious Studies became the School of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts.

Astrophysicist Victoria Kaspi BSc’89 was the first woman to win the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.

 

 

2017

Report of the Provost's Task Force on Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education, McGill’s contribution to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Julie Payette BEng’86, DSc’03 became Canada’s 29th Governor-General and Visitor of McGill University.

School of Architecture renamed Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture.

Max Bell School of Public Policy established.

Bensadoun School of Retail Management was established. 

McGill registered 40,971 students, including 27,526 undergraduates, 9,704 graduates, 1,277, Residents and Fellows, 662 postdocs, and 1,802 other (non-credit).

Jenni Siddey-Gibbons BEng’11 is the third woman and fifth McGill graduate to become a Canadian astronaut.

Sponsored Research revenue, 2007/2008 – 2016/2017, $4,786B: $1,868B came from federal Tri-Agencies, and $296M from provincial Trois Fonds (FRQ).

Desautels MBA program moved into Donald E. Armstrong Building, formerly the McTavish St. bookstore.

Quebec announced assistance for McGill in transforming part of the Royal Victoria Hospital on Pine Ave. into a research and teaching facility.

McGill staff is organized into two associations and 15 unions.

Dr. Brenda Milner PhD’52, DSc’91 Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, celebrated her 100th birthday. She has received the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec.

McGill launched LGBTQ2I+ History Month in October.

China topped international enrolment at McGill for the first time.

Arts Building was renamed McCall MacBain Arts Building.

“Redmen” ceased being used as the name for McGill sports teams.

2020

The Faculty of Medicine was renamed the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, with two new schools: the School of Medicine and the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Faculty of Medicine inaugurated the Outaouais Campus in Gatineau, providing the MDCM program in French.

School of Environment became the Bieler School of Environment

Faculty of Law's Common Law degree changed from LLB to JD (Juris Doctor).

On March 13, McGill joined Quebec and the rest of Canada in a lockdown due to the Covid’19 pandemic.

Teaching for the remainder of the year was conducted virtually.

Graduation ceremonies and Homecoming celebrations are conducted virtually.

Men’s varsity teams were renamed McGill Redbirds.
