2023 Award Recipients

Theo Chambon, U2, Joint Honours Political Science and African Studies

Theo is a Joint-Honours student in Political Science and African Studies. He will be interning at the Center for Democratic Development for Ghana (CDD Ghana) remotely over the summer. The CDD is a non-profit which aims to consolidate democratic institutions in Ghana through policy advocacy and qualitative or quantitative socioeconomic and political research. As an intern for the CDD, Theo will assist research executives with initiatives such as the Afrobarometer and help produce drafts for policy briefs or memos. He hopes to deepen his understanding of political apparatuses and participate in hands-on quantitative research projects on societal issues in West Africa.

Zach Brousseau, U2, Political Science and Economics

Zach Brousseau is a rising fourth-year student in Economics and Political Science. Originally
from San Mateo, California, Zach loves living in Montréal and is incredibly honoured to work with
the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development this summer. Zach looks forward to applying the
skills and concepts he’s learned in his studies to the real world, and he is stoked to learn more
about Ghana, West Africa, and Policymaking this summer.

Lia Watson, Sustainability, Science and Society

Lia is finishing her second year at McGill as a Sustainability, Science and Society student in the Bieler School of Environment. This summer, Lia will be working with a small team to develop databases and educational tools from a lexicon of ecologically-rooted words. This project, housed within the Center for Human Rights and Environment, aims to re-establish and emphasize the connection between humans and the natural world through exploration and analysis of language, with the goal of encouraging environmental protection and mindfulness.

Jesse Smith, U2, Joint Honours History and English Literature

Jesse is a third-year student at McGill currently completing his Joint Honours degree in History and English Literature. They will be working with the Alex Dworkin Canadian Jewish Archives this summer to help organise their collection. He will also assist full-time researchers with various projects. Jesse is incredibly excited to learn more about the archival process and gain hands-on experience with the materials as they plan to pursue a master’s in information studies later on.

Anushka Manoj, U0

Anushka Manoj is a first-year Arts student at McGill University interested in Gender Studies, South-Asian studies, and World Cinemas. Interning at the Kabir Centre for Arts and Culture, she will be working on the South Asian Film Festival of Montreal, which showcases the work of multiple filmmakers on South Asia and its diaspora. A queer South-Asian passionate about films, she is excited for the chance to work behind the scenes and talk to many filmmakers. 

Aamna Rashid, M1, English

Aamna Rashid is an English M1 student whose research focuses on feminist politics, post-colonial studies, and questions of identity and resistance. She will be interning at Teesri Duniya, a culturally diverse theatre company which seeks to represent marginalized communities and alternate histories. Her project will explore the politics of history-writing through an exploration of Teesri’s archive, the aesthetics and politics of their plays and their affective impact on the audience. Aamna aims to focus on theatre of genocide and explore questions of forced ‘un-belonging,’ constructed state of exceptions under oppressive regimes, and the politics of memory. She hopes to explore the revolutionary potential of theatre and its subversive positionality in giving voice to marganilized groups.

Yustine Alejandra Carruyo Soto, U3, Psychology

Yustine Carruyo is a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Psychology with a minor in Behavioural Sciences. Her internship will take place in the Pediatric Oncology Neuro Social Lab at Sainte-Justine Hospital. During her internship, she will finalize a research manuscript that assesses risk factors leading to higher cognitive impairments in pediatric brain tumour survivors. In addition, she has been assigned the responsibility of reviewing more than 1000 abstracts to assist the Canadian Pediatric Cancer Consortium in developing a scoping review.

Her primary career goal is to improve the quality of life of children through neuropsychology and research.

Maya Ojeda Vinelli, U2, Political Science

Maya Ojeda Vinelli is entering her third and final year at McGill University. She is majoring in Political Science and minoring in both International Development and Hispanic Studies. This upcoming summer, she will be travelling to Lima, Peru to start a new position as an intern at NewLink. As an intern, she will contribute meaningfully to NewLink's mission of providing exceptional corporate communications, public affairs, and crisis management solutions to businesses worldwide. This position will offer Maya the chance to apply her Spanish language skills in a professional setting, thus enhancing her value as a bilingual asset for future academic and career endeavours.

Alyssa Razavi Mastali, U3, Political Science

Alyssa Razavi Mastali is a third-year student in Political Science with a double minor in World Cinemas and Environment. This summer, she will work as a Digital Video Assistant at CKUT 90.3fm in Montreal. As a campus/community radio station, CKUT’s mandate is to provide an essential service to those in the Montreal community whose needs are unmet by mainstream commercial radio. She is thrilled to engage in various aspects of video production and gain valuable technical experience within a non-profit organization.

Tessa Soh, U2, Economics and Psychology

Tessa is a second-year student enrolled in a dual major in Economics and Psychology. With a keen interest in the convergence of psychology and technology, Tessa possesses an entrepreneurial mindset. As an intern at Neufast, she will spearhead investment and client acquisition efforts, work alongside psychologists and principle data scientists, while also engaging product development. This internship is expected to broaden her knowledge of AI, allowing her to align her academic pursuits with real-world scenarios.

Mamoune Zizi, U1, Psychology and Political Science

Mamoune Zizi, a second-year double major in Psychology and Political Science at McGill University, has been offered an internship with The Upstream Journal, a Montreal-based non-profit organization that advocates for Human Rights, Inequality, and Social Justice. Through his internship, Mamoune will conduct primary research and utilize his findings to produce an article, podcast, and promotional video that support the organization's mission to amplify marginalized voices.

Ava Sonies, U1, History

Ava Sonies will be interning with Montreal’s Suoni Per il Popolo festival, dedicated to showcasing non-mainstream music genres performed by local and international artists. Ava is excited to work with an organization that employs music as activism, as its diverse roster of artists challenges contemporary Eurocentric approaches to avant-garde music. Being an active member in Montreal’s DIY music scene and a musician, Ava is thrilled to combine her passion with a cause she believes in.

Emily Hardie, U1, Geography and Philosophy

Emily Hardie is a second-year student pursing a joint honours in Philosophy and Geography. While interning at the Climate Reality Project, she will help work on the National Climate League: The Campus Edition, which is a yearly report focusing on sustainable action across various universities. She will also work on the Campus Climate Action Summit by arranging for speakers and further empowering youth from the bottom up in order to resist exploitation and ecological degradation. 

Julie Jacques, U2, English and History

Julie is a U2 student majoring in English Literature and History. Her interests lie more specifically in Canadian Literature in History, making her a perfect fit for an internship at Véhicule Press, an independent, Montreal-based publisher of Canadian writing, including but not limited to fiction, poetry, and social history. She looks forward to learning about the ins and outs of publishing this summer and hopes to have a great time at Véhicule Press’ 50-year anniversary gala!

Alice Huaut, U2, Political Science

Alice (she/her) is a second-year student pursuing a major in political science and double minoring in international development studies and social entrepreneurship. This summer, she will be a journalism intern for the digital media platform Thesocialtalks. This organization gathers individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and promotes social justice values. Alice is excited to refine her understanding of current events and perfect her written communication skills.

Maria Lima Fernandes Reis, U1, Double Major in Political Science and International Development Studies

Even as a child, Maria was passionate - and vocal - about gender equality and women’s liberation. Now, she has the opportunity to intern with Monthly Dignity, a nonprofit fighting period poverty through education, advocacy, and product distribution. Hoping to pursue a career focused on women’s rights and development, Maria is thrilled to work with a grassroots organization. She is most excited about producing educational content and learning how to best support people experiencing precarity and marginalization.

Wendy Lin, U1, Double major in Int'l Development Studies and English

Wendy Lin is a U1 student double majoring in International Development and Cultural Studies with a minor in East Asian Language and Literature. This summer, she will be interning with Festival Accès Asie, a Montréal-based arts festival which promotes Asian cultures and histories. Passionate about preserving Asian heritage, Wendy looks forward to working firsthand in the artistic and cultural sector while furthering her knowledge and experience in community development and event coordination.

Estee Seidler, U1, Urban Studies and HIstory 

Estee Seidler, a second-year Urban Studies and History student, is thrilled to spend her summer with CKUT 90.3, Montreal’s community radio station. As CKUT’s music department intern, she will be responsible for audio editing and production, music archiving, and writing for the music department blog. Through her internship, she looks forward to exploring the Montreal music scene and developing skills critical to audio production, station management, and music journalism.

Sofia Tchamova, U3, Economics and Sociology

Sofia Tchamova is currently in her fourth year at McGill, studying Economics and Sociology. She is drawn to these subjects largely due to her interest in the social dynamics that shape our everyday lives and decision makings. Within these subjects, she enjoys exploring issues surrounding socio-economic class, financial crisis and economic history. This summer, Sofia will intern at CKUT Radio station to produce the Expanding Economics podcast and help the station with broadcast programming.

Emma Vaulpré, U1, International Development 

Emma Vaulpré is a second year at McGill, pursuing a major in International Development and a double-minor in Political Science and Social Entrepreneurship. She will be interning with the MUHC in Montreal and is excited to coordinate and project manage the promotion and communication activities of the MUHC “Run for a Reason” campaign. Emma looks forward to working with the team, assisting with stewardship activities as well as developing the foundation’s social media presence.

Liliana-Christiano Mason, U2, Political Science

Liliana Mason is finishing her third year in Political Science with a double minor in African Studies and Gender, Sexuality, Feminism, and Social Justice. This summer she will be participating in an internship with Synergos, a non-governmental organization that partners with leaders from more than 50 countries to solve complex problems such as poverty, social injustice, and climate change. She is passionate about governance and creating social change, and is looking forward to gaining experience at such an impactful organization.

Zachary Gonzalez, U3, Anthropology and English (Drama & Theater)

Zachary is a fourth-year student pursuing a double major in anthropology and English (drama and theater) with an additional minor in the history and philosophy of science. He will be interning with the Jardins de Métis to assist in the process of cataloguing and describing a collection of artifacts from Canadian history. Zachary is excited to get some hands-on experience with the collection and become more familiar with Canadian history in the region of Quebec.

Andrea Orakafaditya, U2, Joint-Honours Political Science and Gender Studies

Andrea is a second-year student pursuing a double major in Political Science and Gender Studies. She will intern at Equitas, a non-profit dedicated to advancing social equality and human rights through education. As a member of their Canadian Team, she will assist the organization with youth programs and partnerships with other community members and organizations. Andrea eagerly awaits the opportunity to put into practice her academic experience and her drive for equal rights and representation.

Ines Amigorena, U2, Joint Honours History and Latin American Studies 

Ines Amigorena is in her third year at McGill, pursuing a Joint Honours degree in History and Latin American Studies. She will be interning with More Than Words at the Participatory Cultures Lab of McGill, an educative project addressing sexual and gender-based violence against Indigenous youth through arts-based youth-led survivor engagement. Ines is thankful for the opportunity to be able to work for and with Indigenous youth and contribute to creative educational initiatives.

Violet Massie-Vereker, U3, Geography-Urban Studies 

This summer, Violet will intern with the Native Friendship Centre, a resource hub for Indigenous members of the Montréal community. She will work with the Food Security Program to collect data on the grocery baskets distributed each week and meals served daily to present at conferences and fundraising events. Additionally, she will help grow a rooftop garden to provide fresh ingredients for the kitchen at the centre.

Élisabeth Saucier, U2, Anthropology 

Élisabeth is a second-year student pursuing a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in Quebec Studies and Community Engaged-Learning. This summer, they will be interning at Youth in Motion, an organization that aims at empowering teenagers of Little Burgundy, Montreal. They are looking forward to meeting inspiring young people, working in a warm environment and getting a more profound understanding of their home city’s many realities.

Angie Gjika, U2, International Development Studies

Angie Gjika is currently a third-year student majoring in International Development with a minor in Italian studies and sociology. This summer, she will work in Montréal at The Center for Human Rights and Environment (CHRE). Angie has always been committed to highlight and combat climate change concerns and how to communicate with youth on how to effectively solve these issues. With this internship, Angie is looking forward to continue to explore the relationship between public polices and climate change with young individuals to further encourage and spark change.

Oliver McNay, U2, International Development Studies

In this summer internship with the Catholic Church of Houston, Oliver will be actively involved in two key areas: School Impact and refugee resettlement for migrants from Latin America. Working directly with child refugee clients through School Impact, Oliver will participate in parent orientation sessions, assist with school enrolment, and provide in-school support during the summer. Additionally, Oliver will contribute to the refugee resettlement process, offering guidance and support to migrants from Latin America as they navigate the complexities of starting a new life in the United States. This includes assisting with paperwork, connecting them to essential resources, and promoting their successful integration into their new communities. 

Cecilia Gillis, U3, Political Science

Cecilia is in her third year of Political Science with two minors in French and European Literature. She will be interning at the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, a non-profit that works with advocacy groups and legislators to draft legislation, organize testimony, and advocate for policy change supporting victims and survivors. Cecilia will work with the Public Affairs Team, evaluating legislation and working on future advocacy campaigns and outreach initiatives. She is very glad to have the opportunity to work with an organization doing such meaningful, albeit serious, work.

Wendy Zhao, U3, English

Wendy, pursuing a major in English Literature and minor in History, will be completing an internship with the Arts in the Margins in Montreal. The non-profit corporation is dedicated to helping build healthy, self-sustaining communities via the creative arts, including offering free art workshops and artist talks. Wendy is looking forward to learning about how the presence of accessible art opportunities can impact the health of our communities.

Nkwanzi Banage, U1, Political Science

Nkwanzi is a second-year student pursuing a major in Political Science and a minor in Economics. This summer, she will be working as a journalism intern with The Upstream Journal, a human rights and social justice magazine based in Montréal. With a strong passion for advocacy, she is excited by the opportunity to explore the world of journalism and podcasting, develop her skills as a writer, and dive into social justice issues that interest her.  

Emilie Villemaire, U1, Political Science

Emilie Villemaire is in her second year of undergraduate studies at McGill University, pursuing a Major in Political Science, with a Double Minor in International Development Studies and Quebec Studies. During her internship with La Ligue des Droits et Libertés, a non-profit human rights organization founded in 1963, she will be conducting archival research on the history of human rights struggles in Montreal, and examining how those struggles shaped the city’s current realities.

Iseline Jousse, U3, Environment

Iseline Jousse is a third year undergraduate student studying environment in the inter faculty program. She will be interning with the Climate Reality Project Canada, an organization dedicated to tackling climate change through education and grass-roots action. As Campaign Intern she will be assisting the National Campaign Manager with task related to the 2023 National Climate League, and will also be researching case studies highlighting inspiring climate action from cities around the world. 

Emma Bainbridge, U2, Urban Studies

Emma Bainbridge is a second-year student pursuing a major in Urban Studies with a double minor in Communications and Political Science who is very passionate about media, urban policy, and climate justice. She will be interning at the Climate Reality Project Canada this summer, organizing and developing resources, communications, and content for the Community Climate Hubs Program. She is excited to get experience doing research, producing written content, and working for a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting climate advocacy. 

Sachkeerat Grewal, U2, Political Science

Sachkeerat Grewal is a Second-Year Political Science student with a minor in Sociology and Anthropology. This summer, she will be interning at Éduconnexion as the Citizen Engagement Education Intern, where she will be able to work on project management efforts and educational programs to improve services to marginalized communities. As an advocate of human rights, she is grateful for her ability to assist the organization with its efforts towards building educational tools and workshops to make civic education and mobilization accessible to all communities. 

Saadwi Balaji, U3, Honours International Development Studies

Saadwi is a U3 student in Honours International Development Studies, minoring in Social Entrepreneurship. This is her second summer interning through the Arts Internship Office where she will support the efforts of Festival Acces Asie. The festival is dedicated to representing Asian heritage arts through multimedia events, online exposure, and other activities. They provide a platform for artists and locals to engage with Asian-Canadian creators. As an illustrator herself, Saadwi hopes to provide that perspective along with her developmental lens to further engage with the festival.

Yifei Yu, U2, Honours Sociology 

Yifei Yu is a second-year student in Honours Sociology with a minor in GSFS. This summer they will be interning with the Institute for Human Development and Well-being. They look forward to learning about the research projects at the IHDW and explore how interdisciplinary qualitative research help to address issues surrounding inequality. Yifei is passionate about the social issues and hopes to improve their research and writing skills from this internship. 

Samuel Anjou Kang-Stryker, U3, History and Russian Literature

Anjou is a fourth-year student finishing his studies in History and the Russian language. This summer, he will be working with the Jardins de Métis in Northern Québec to conduct research on the histories behind Tibetan plants recently imported to the gardens. As a final goal, he will be preparing an exhibit of his research for visitors , and contributing towards an important cultural heritage center in the region. As a historian who envisions to pursue his academic career, Anjou is excited to develop new skills in the discipline and gain first-hand experience through this internship.

Ella Siciliano, U2, Anthopology

Ella is a second-year student at McGill pursuing a major in Anthropology and a minor in computer science. This summer, she will intern at the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History (Pointe-à-Callière). As a born and raised Montrealer, Ella is fascinated with her city’s origins, architecture and the people that have shaped it. Through this internship, she hopes to acquire hands-on experience in handling and working on archaeological collections and materials, as well as deepen her understanding of Montreal’s archaeological heritage.  

Shailee Rajak, M1, English

Shailee is a second-year graduate student in the Department of English Literature and Drama. She is currently writing her thesis on queer representation and the politics of gender in postcolonial, Indian drama. During the summer of 2023, she will be interning at the Kabir Centre for Arts and Culture. She will be a member of the Programming Committee for the South Asian Film Festival of Montreal (SAFFM) 2024. The annual festival is committed to providing a platform for filmmakers worldwide whose films have a focus on South Asia. As a scholar of theatre and gender studies, she looks forward to contributing towards the curation of a festival that fosters discussions around diasporic and immigrant experiences through an exploration of cinema. She believes that such events enhance the thriving discourse around arts and culture in the city, contributing to its rich social milieu.

Margo Berthier, U3, Geography (urban studies)

Margo is a U3 student pursuing a major in geography (urban studies) and a double minor in environment and social entrepreneurship. This summer she will be interning at Lemay, an architecture firm that takes aims to create meaningful spaces that contribute to the well-being of its users and the natural environment. Margo is looking forward to being a research assistant, supporting the sustainable strategies team in identifying sustainable development frameworks for their ongoing urban projects.

Brooklyn Carr, U2, Honours Art History

Brooklyn Carr is a Honours art history student from Atlanta, Georgia. Brooklyn is the daughter of McGill alumni Roger Carr and granddaughter of alumni Leithland Carr. She is passionate about equity and the advancement of the Black community and aspires to advocate for the Black community by uplifting Black artists and their artistry. She currently interns with the Black Healing Centre and is an executive member of the Multi-Ethnic Student Alliance, Folio Magazine, and the McGill Arts Collective.

Eva Elbert, U2, Environment and Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies

Eva is a second-year student pursuing a Joint Honours degree in Environment and Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies. This summer, she will be working as an Environmental Education intern at the Howard County Conservancy in Maryland. She will plan and conduct environmental lessons at their summer camp. She is excited to foster responsible environmental stewardship in campers while developing a stronger sense of place and better understanding of her local ecology.

Pauline Goemans, U2, Economics

Pauline Goemans is second year student majoring in Economics and minoring in International Development Studies and Arabic Language. She will be interning at the Upstream Journal, a human rights magazine and NGO based in Montreal, where she will be working on an individual project consisting of an article, a podcast and a promotional video. In hopes of pursuing a career in Journalism, she intends to gain hands on experience in the field while researching relevant social justice issues.

Lillian Borger, U4, Honours Political Science

Lillian is a third year Political Science student with minors in Social Entrepreneurship and Communications. This summer, she will be interning with Comm-un, a community organization located in the Milton Park area. She will be helping with the development of a new co-operative art space for the community to create and sell art. This will involve organizational tasks, researching other similar programs, creating communication materials, and helping out wherever possible!

Taïna Dushime, U2, International Development Studies

Taïna is studying International Development and African studies at McGill. She will be interning at a non-profit organization working with children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS crisis in Rwanda, in order to give them the tools to reconnect with society. She is deeply drawn to this cause due to her commitment to understanding and addressing the complex challenges facing vulnerable communities around the world. As a proud Pan-Africanist, she is also eager to participate in the social, political, and economic stability of the continent.

Ella Uwurukundo, U1, Psychology and Sociology

Ella is a U1 psychology and sociology student. This summer, she will be working as a project management intern, as she will be mentoring a project for black youth from Montreal-Nord. Ella will accompany Educonnexion’s project manager in completing the duties related to the Afro-descendant youth mentorship project. This role will provide Ella with invaluable knowledge and experience to assist in her future academic and career goals.

Thélia Badoana, U0, Psychology

Thélia is a U0 student majoring in Psychology and minoring in African Studies and Behavioural Science. She will intern at the Toronto-based non-profit Regent Park Film Festival (RPFF), which is Toronto's longest-running, free community film festival. RPFF supports local and international independent artists while providing services to low-income communities and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) groups. Thélia will assist RPFF with the marketing and community outreach strategy for the company’s summer events.

Na'ilah Simone, U3, Political Science

Na'ilah Simone, a U3 Political Science major with minors in International Development and Hispanic Studies, will intern with the UN Population Fund's Regional Bureau in Panama, a leading advocate for youth and women's empowerment, particularly in sexual and reproductive health rights. Enthusiastic about supporting the communications team with report writing, event coordination, and media monitoring, she is also eager to enhance her Spanish proficiency and acquire new skills in graphic design and photography.

Mariama Barry, U1, Economics

Mariama is a U1 student pursuing a major in Economics and a minor in International Development Studies. This summer, she will be an intern at The Leadership African Force. Throughout this internship, she will assist in planning a conference aimed at unpacking Canada and Africa's economic and financial development. Mariama is excited to start her training, where she is excited to collaborate with experts and stakeholders in economics and international development, where she will gain invaluable experience to broaden her perspective on this topic.

Fatoumata Keita, U2, Political Science & International Development

This summer, Fatoumata will be interning at the Non-Profit Organization DESTA Black Community Network. The organization is dedicated to uplifting the black community in Montreal, by providing them with support in their education, and employability, as well as guiding them through the steps in entrepreneurship. She will be part of the marketing team, responsible for the promotion of the Organization, as well as the promotion of their events and services.

James Jarrett, U3, English Literature and Music

James Jarrett is entering his fourth year of a double major in English Literature and Music. This summer he will be working with Poetry Matters, an initiative based in the Department of English, on communications with local poets and groups; managing the initiative's social media and website, including curating a weekly series, "Fridays on Form;" and developing promotional materials for events. James is excited to support and engage with poetic communities at McGill, in Montréal, and beyond, and to learn valuable communications and administrative skills

Hugo Barsacq-Camard, U2, Anthropology

Hugo Barsacq-Camard is a second-year undergraduate majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Environment. He will be interning for McGill’s Visual Arts Collection, which will provide him with hands-on experience working with a collection and an archive. Having studied literature, Art history, and archaeology, he is interested in the form and evolution of artifacts and artworks, as well as their broader relationship with other disciplines.

Adeline Fisher, U2, History

Adeline Fisher has recently completed her second year of studies as an Honours History student, and will be interning this summer with the Black Watch Museum and Archives. With a passion for military history and the history of the Scottish-Canadian community, Adeline is eager to dig through the archives and help the Black Watch rediscover forgotten aspects of its history. She equally looks forward to learning about the archiving and cataloguing process in a professional setting.

Kurt Karul, U3, Political Science

Kurt is a third-year Political Science (Hons.) student double minoring in Economics and Musical Applications of Technology, and he is extremely excited to be a Commercial Section Intern with the U.S. Consulate General Montreal this summer. As part of his internship duties, he will provide research and analysis on U.S.-Quebec commercial opportunities, draft memos for consulate officials, and conduct market research for U.S. companies seeking strategic business alliances in Canada. He is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in one of the world’s most reputable diplomatic institutions.

Han Nguyen, U2, Anthropology

Han is a third-year student, majoring in Anthropology along with minoring in Art History and Religious Studies. She will be interning this summer for the Jardins de Métis/Reford Gardens, a Canadian National Historic Site located in Grand-Métis, Quebec. She will participate in researching about Anna Lois (Dawson) Harrington’s watercolor paintings and her life for a future exhibition.

Aida Roy van Mierlo, U2, Economics 

Aida Roy van Mierlo is a second-year student pursuing her B.A. in International Development and Economics. This summer, she will be interning at the Trade and Economic Section of the Delegation of the European Union to Canada. Shivya Srivastava , U2, Economics and Psychology

Shivya is a second-year student in Economics and Psychology at McGill. She will pursue a Marketing Internship at HealthAssure, an Indian primary healthcare aggregator. As a passionate Economics student with a keen interest in design, Shivya is excited to combine her education with her hobbies. She will work alongside the Marketing department to develop their website, analyze engagement metrics and work closely with the product development team, providing market insights that inform their web design.

Julia Toth, U3, Sociology and Biology

Julia is a third-year student completing a Bachelor’s of Arts and Sciences in Sociology and Biology. This summer, she will intern with the McGill University Health Centre Foundation. As an intern, Julia will assist with event based fundraising efforts and maintaining positive relationships with donors. Nicholas Giles, U2, History and GSFS

Nicholas is an international student currently pursuing a B.A. in History with a minor in GSFS. He will be spending his summer interning as a coordinator at the Canadian Federation of Friends of Museums, a national organization who aims to promote volunteer work in museums and heritage sites across Canada, and offering resources and support to these volunteers. Myriam Bourry-Shalabi, U2, Anthropology

Myriam Bourry-Shalabi (she/her) is a second-year student pursuing a double major in History and Anthropology. This summer, she is interning at the Institute of Human Development and Well-being, a transdisciplinary research unit that seeks to investigate the role policy and policymaking play in the human development and well-being for at-risk or marginalized populations. As her interests include visual anthropology and the visualizations of justice, advocacy, and agency in photography, Myriam is looking forward to learning more about participatory arts based research and arts-based approaches in an academic context.

Joseph is a third year student in Political Science. He will be working with the Montreal-based Youth in Motion group which is dedicated to the education of and engagement with teenagers, particularly regaridng contemporary issues. Gabriel is a third-year student studying Comparative Politics, International Development while minoring in Anthropology. For summer 2023 he will be working as a research intern at the US-ASEAN Business Council, doing detailed news analysis and writing reports in the areas of sustainability, health, and life sciences in Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Myanmar. The council seeks to expand economic development as well as a number of good governance and sustainability goals in the ASEAN economic block.

Holly Beato, U3, Sustainability, Society, and Society

Holly Beato (she/her) is an American international student studying Sustainability, Society, and Society and minoring in GIS and remote sensing at McGill. Her primary interests are in protecting and managing coastal environments and watersheds and ensuring food sustainability. She will be working at Cathance River Education Alliance this summer as an environmental education intern, giving her a chance to explore her passions for community involvement, GIS, and place-based education.

Nicolas Zolver-Roos, U2, Political Science

Nicolas is a U2 student in political science, with a minor in mathematics. He has a keen interest in international relations and developing-areas politics. He had the chance to explore Kenya and Tanzania through the African Field Study Semester.

This summer, Nicolas will intern at the Alliance Française de Nairobi. This opportunity will allow him to engage with European cultural diplomacy in Kenya, as well as to explore the Kenyan cultural scene.

Maiya Karsan, U1, Sociology

Maiya is a second-year student at McGill University. She is studying sociology, history, and social entrepreneurship. She will be interning at the Canadian Centre for Applied Research in Cancer Control (ARCC) in Vancouver. The ARCC is a non-governmental organization that aims to improve cancer control and the delivery of cancer care. Maiya is keen to pursue a career in social justice, so she is very excited to help develop new information resources focusing on the ethical and societal issues related to genomic technologies this summer.

Eliza Petrean, U2, Political Science and Economics

Eliza will be interning at the U.S. Consulate General, in the Commercial Section which aids U.S. companies seeking partners and distributors in Quebec, as well as supporting and fostering investment in the United States by Quebec companies. Her responsibilities will include conducting trade-related research and analysis for US companies and drafting replies to trade inquiries. This internship will give her the chance to gain experience in the world of government policy and international trade.

Sabrina Nelson, U2, Honours Political Science

Sabrina is pursuing a B.A. in Honours Political Science with a minor in International Development studies. This summer, she will be interning a the Delegation of the European Union to Canada in Ottawa. ‘I study History, Health Geography and Art History at McGill. With an interdisciplinary focus on community marginalization and intersectional social solidarity, I have developed a particular interest in art as resistance to oppression. I make art out of cathartic interest: through paint, I aim to reify sensations and experiences that are (socially) challenging to verbally communicate. As an intersectional feminist scholar and artist, I aim to rupture visual expectations of femininity whilst encouraging a broad-ranging ethos of love and tolerance.’

Lake Liu, U2, Honours International Development Studies

Lake is a third-year student pursuing an Honours International Development Studies Degree with a minor in East Asian Studies. This summer, she will be interning at CAMFED Canada, an international NGO tackling poverty and inequality by supporting girls’ education. Madeleine is a third-year student pursuing a major in International Development Studies and double minoring in Social Entrepreneurship and East Asian Language & Literature. Ioannis Dedes, U3, Political Science and History

Ioannis Dedes is a U3 student at McGill, majoring in Political Science and History. He is also an Experienced Freelance Content Writer and Copywriter with a demonstrated history of working in the online media industry, 250+ online publications, 10+ agency collaborations, and 300,000+ online reads. This summer, he will be entering an internship at the Hellenic Foundation of European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in Athens. ELIAMEP is an independent, non-governmental, nonprofit think tank, established in Athens, Greece, in 1988. Ioannis will conduct political research taking into account the current climate of international relations, providing resources for scholarly research, and creating content for ELIAMEP’s social media pages and website.

Alexandre Hinton, U3, History

Alex Hinton is a U3 history and communications student at McGill University. He will be interning at The New Lede, a non-profit micro newsroom run by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). In this role, Alex will produce short documentaries about pressing environmental issues. Drawing from his experiences as a former Multimedia Editor for The McGill Tribune and as a Creative Coordinator for MUSTBUS, he aims to bring his storytelling expertise to the project.

Victoria Sicurello, U3, History

Victoria is a third-year student pursuing a joint honours program in History and Art History. This summer, she will be interning at the Canadian Federation of Friends of Museums (CFFM), where she will be working to assist the membership drive, social media campaign, participate in outreach and event coordination, as well as undertake the research, writing, and editing of their newsletter and volunteer bulletin. Camila is a second-year student at McGill, pursuing a major in Sociology and a double minor in Hispanic Studies and Gender, Social Justice, and Feminist Studies. This summer, she will be interning with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Guatemala as a Resettlement intern. With an interest in human rights and immigration work, Camila hopes to contribute meaningful research to UNHCR Guatemala’s resettlement program and further understand refugee displacement in Latin America.

Natalia Kolesnikow, U2, History and Latin American Studies

Natalia is a Joint Honours student studying History and Latin American Studies with a minor in Political Science. She has spent the winter semester on exchange in Mexico City studying Latin America more in-depth and practicing her Spanish. She will be working with a local Mexico City NGO, Casa Refugiados, developing a research proposal and working with migrants and refugees that are housed at the facility.

Erin Keating, U2, Political Science

Erin is a third-year student at McGill studying Political Science and Geology. This summer, she will be interning remotely for the Cash-Based Interventions (CBI) team at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Guatemala. She will assist the CBI team in optimizing access to resources for persons facing displacement and victimization in Guatemala. Erin is eager to learn more about the day-to-day work at the UNHCR and assist those in need this summer.

Phoebe Holt-Reiss, U2, Political Science

Phoebe is a Political Science and Sociology student entering her third year at McGill. She is particularly interested in civic engagement and philanthropy and will be a Nonprofit Team Intern at Berger Hirschberg Strategies this Summer. Berger Hirschberg is a political fundraising firm whose nonprofit clients have included Emily’s List, NARAL, and Everytown for Gun Safety. As intern, Phoebe will be researching prospective donors and building philanthropic relationships while learning about the psychology behind philanthropy.

Neha Sundar, U2, Joint Honours Political Science and Philosophy

Neha is a second-year Joint Honours student studying Political Science and Philosophy who will be interning at the Délégation générale du Québec à New York. She will take on a variety of research tasks in promoting the interests of Quebec in sectors such as trade, education, investment and technology. Being born in New York and later moving between Toronto and Montréal, Neha has a passion for U.S.-Canada relations and matters of international governance.

Juliet Morrison, U2, Political Science

Juliet is a third-year student pursuing an honours degree in Political Science with a minor in Gender, Sexuality, Feminism and Social Justice. This summer, she will work at the Canadian Delegation to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OCSE) in Vienna. This summer, she will intern at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the International Organizations in Vienna (VPERM). As a Policy Intern, she will be assisting the Mission in the management of Canada’s participation in and relationship with multilateral organizations including the IAEA, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Olivia Ardito is a second-year student at McGill who is currently pursuing a major in Political Science and a double minor in Geography/Urban Studies and Hispanic Studies. She is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and will be working in Washington, D.C. this summer with Congressman Jim McGovern as a recipient of the Stanley Miller Fellowship. She is excited to be working for the American Federal Government and partake in activities such as meeting with senators, observing Congressional sessions, and working with constituents.

Sophia Khiavi, U3, Philosophy and Political Science

Sophia is a third year student studying Philosophy and Political Science. This summer, she will be interning at the Embassy of Canada in Riga, Latvia, for Global Affairs Canada. At the Mission, Sophia will provide accompaniment to diplomatic meetings, conferences and symposia on international policy themes, and she will provide support in Embassy public outreach, and in the hosting of high-level and official visitors. Sophia will assist in research into policy and thematic areas that contribute to Canada-Latvia relations.

Sophie Semeniuk, U2, Art History and English Cultural Studies

Sophie Semeniuk is a U2 Joint-Honours student in Art History and English Cultural Studies. This summer, she will intern at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome. At this research institute for Art History, she is excited to learn how to conduct archival work through a project that will document and digitize materials from and about Italian sculptor Mauro Staccioli. It will be an experience that unites her passions for contemporary art, criticism, and digital humanities.

Dilara Uyanik, U3, Political Science

Dilara Uyanik is entering her third and final year at McGill, where she is completing a major in Political Science and double minors in Economics and Communications. This summer, she will intern with the Commercial Section of the United States Consulate General. As an intern, she will conduct trade-related market research, promote US products in the Turkish marketplace, and assist Turkish firms in their efforts to profit from their alliances with American companies.

Hannah Murray, U3, Joint Honours History and International Development Studies

Hannah is in her third year at McGill University pursuing a Joint Honours B.A. in History and International Development Studies. This summer, she will be interning with the 78th Fraser Highlanders, a non-profit historical association that conducts research on Scottish Highland soldiers of the Seven Years’ War and their descendants throughout North America. Zoe Randhawa is a second-year student majoring in Honours History and minoring in Sociology. This summer, she will be interning at the Black Watch Museum and Archives researching Indigenous history and involvement within the Black Watch military regiment, which is the oldest highland regiment in Canada. Zoe is excited to work with archival and primary documents in a small team of historians to further her knowledge of Canadian and Indigenous history.

Fion Zhen, U2, Honours HIstory and Philosophy

Fion is a U2 honours history and philosophy student. Fond of transdisciplinarity, her fields of interests include political economy, settler colonialism in North America, and general Marxist intellectual history. After interning for the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California’s ‘Five Chinatowns’ project last summer, she has been curious to continue learning about and working through the questions of public history, museum preservation, and biography through mentors, old and new. Adèle is a third-year student, pursuing an honours degree in Political Sciences with minors in International Development and in Latin American and Caribbean studies. Sara Saleem Daredia, U1, International Development

Sara Saleem Daredia, a U1 student majoring in International Development with a minor in Environment, will intern with The Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency (GB-EPA) in Pakistan. This opportunity will allow her to interact with local climate activists, experts, and refugees, documenting their experiences in Gilgit Baltistan's mountainous valleys. Collaborating with GB-EPA's media partners, Ibex Media Network (IMN), Sara will create short documentaries and social media posts to raise national awareness of GB's climate crisis. Pakistan ranks fifth among countries most vulnerable to climate disasters, making GB-EPA's sustainable climate actions particularly crucial. Sara is driven by her passion for addressing environmental challenges and believes her internship will contribute to GB-EPA's efforts while inspiring others to take action.

Lara (Tsatsral) Erdenee, U3, Economics

Lara (Tsatsral) Erdenee is a third-year student pursuing a BA degree in economics with a minor in social entrepreneurship and computer science. She will be interning at GerHub, a non-profit organization aiming to find innovative and creative solutions to common, yet pressing problems in the ger areas of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. As a Social Innovation Intern, she is looking forward to gaining valuable experience in designing and conducting local projects to benefit the most vulnerable communities.

Gaya Karalasingam, U3, Political Science

Gayathri Karalasingam is a fourth-year student in Honours Political Science. This summer she will have the opportunity to intern with Betsy Elizabeth Trust (Help Kids India), where she will support the non-profit in activities related to advocacy, community outreach, and research on student outcomes to promote sound preschool education and health care for persons of concern. Gayathri hopes to contribute meaningfully to BET’s project in alleviating Dalit communities’ hardship.

Ilana Nzizera, U2, Economics

Ilana Nzizera is an Economics major and International Development Studies minor. This summer, she will intern at the Rwanda Development Board located in Kigali, Rwanda. The RDB has significantly impacted Rwanda's development by driving economic growth, attracting investment, creating jobs, and promoting tourism. Its efforts have contributed to Rwanda's transformation from a post-conflict country to a dynamic and competitive economy, with a positive impact on the livelihoods of citizens. Through this internship, Ilana hopes to gain practical experience, exposure to multidisciplinary work, and insights into economic policy and development.

Asha Trotz-Motayne, U3, Cultural Studies and History

Asha is a fourth year Cultural Studies and History major with a minor in Political Science. This summer she will be interning with Fragments of Hope in Belize, a NGO devoted to coral reef restoration and advocacy for the sustainable management of associated habitats. Asha’s main role will involve outreach, media creation (mainly video campaigns), and social media development. Asha is excited to experience working with a grassroots organisation and to get the chance to help promote the essential work of local communities on an international level.

Veronica is a third-year undergraduate student, majoring in Economics, with a minor in Religious Studies. She will be joining the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) in Panama as an intern in the Latin American and Caribbean regional branch. Through this internship experience, Veronica hopes to gain firsthand experience in the international and humanitarian fields and is looking forward to pursuing multidisciplinary approaches towards global issues, as well as emergency and international assistance.

Malak is in her third year pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Honours Political Science with a major in Economics. She will be interning at Éduconnexion in Montreal this summer, a non-profit organization that helps individuals and other organizations in their pursuit of a more just and ecological world by equipping them with the tools necessary to take action. She looks forward to participating in project management, helping with research and the development of new educational tools, and ultimately carrying out Éduconnexion's mission.

Camille Balan, U2, Political Science

Camille Balan is a U2 student at McGill majoring in political science and double minoring in Quebec studies and Hispanic studies. She is interested in human rights, international politics, and Quebec history. Therefore, this summer she chose to intern at the Ligue des droits et libertés, a non-profit organization that promotes and defends the universal human rights declaration in Quebec. It’s their 60^th anniversary this year and the 75^th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights as well. During her internship she will be helping them on their various projects such as conferences and interactive maps trying to inform people on the history of human rights in Quebec and on the ongoing battles.

Robert Black, U3, International Development Studies

Robert Black is a third year student in Honours International Development Studies, with minors in East Asian Studies and Urban Studies. This summer he will be interning at the Montreal office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Some of the internship’s tasks will include attending stakeholder meetings and writing media reports. He is looking forward to gaining more practical experience working on migration and refugee policy and witnessing how the UNHCR works with Canadian institutions to promote refugee rights.

Giuliana Grabina, U3, Philosophy

Giuliana is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a major in Philosophy and a minor in History. This summer, she will be interning at Equitas –International Centre for Human Rights Education in Montreal. She will be involved in organizing Equitas’ three-week intensive International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) at John Abbott College in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, where approximately 90 human rights workers from around 50 countries come to gain knowledge, skills and strategies related to human rights education.

Andrae Wang, U1, Cognitive Science

Andrae is a second year student pursuing a degree in Cognitive Science with a minor in Economics. She will be doing an internship with the Participatory Cultures Lab (PCL) this summer. The PCL uses visual and participatory approaches to research,and their work links to issues of social justice. As an intern, Andrae will be involved with the planning and implementation of the McGill International Cellphilm Festival. She looks forward to learning more about participatory visual methodologies in community-based research
