Expert: House Republicans to open Joe Biden impeachment inquiry

Published: 13 September 2023

U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he is directing a House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his family's business dealings. McCarthy said the House investigation has found a "culture of corruption" around the Biden family. Members such as Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz, representatives from Georgia and Florida, respectively, have been among those pushing for an inquiry. (CBC News)

Here is an expert from McGill University who can comment on this topic:

The Freedom Caucus, a group of far-right GOP legislators in the House of Representatives, is essentially forcing Kevin McCarthy to open impeachment inquiries even though the GOP-led committees in the House have not turned up any evidence that President Biden was involved in the business dealings of his troubled son, Hunter. I suspect that McCarthy doesn't want to do this, but that he's hoping this will placate the Freedom Caucus and enable him to keep his job as Speaker of the House. I doubt that an inquiry will help the Republicans with the moderates and swing voters they will need to beat Biden next year.”
