17th Research Day showcases remarkable student research

The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences held its 17th annual Research Day on April 18th, providing an opportunity for its graduate and undergraduate students to present their research and findings. The event was a success, showcasing the exceptional research within the faculty and highlighting the importance of continued advancements in the field of dental medicine and oral health sciences.

The event featured two keynote speakers, Dr. Carlos Quiñonez, Vice Dean and Director of Dentistry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry of Western University, and Dr. Jill Helms, Professor of Surgery and Co-Director of the Center for Maternal Fetal Precision Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Quiñonez spoke about the ethical and professional pressures in the dental care sector, while Helms' presentation focused on techniques that mimic a human's natural ability to restore soft tissue attachment to teeth and implants. The engaging presentations inspired the audience and fostered meaningful discussions among attendees.

Over 70 students presented their research through poster and oral presentations. As Heba Madi, PhD Candidate and the Chair of the Research Day organizing committee explains, "participating in Research Day means presenting your research work to an audience, which may include fellow students, faculty members, and industry professionals. It typically involves preparing a poster or presentation that summarizes the key findings and implications of your research and being available to answer questions and discuss your work with others. It is an opportunity to share your research, gain valuable feedback, and potentially make important connections."

The day concluded with an award ceremony recognizing outstanding presentations and a cocktail reception, which provided an opportunity for further networking and discussions among participants. Madi notes that presenting at Research Day helps to build students' confidence and improve their communication skills, both of which are important for success in any field of research.
