Anthony Musiwa

Anthony is a first-year PhD Candidate at the Centre for Research on Children and Families at McGill University School of Social Work. He retains 10 years of social work practice experience in development and humanitarian settings in Zimbabwe and (briefly) USA, involving designing and implementing multi-packaged programs for vulnerable children, young people and families. Such programs have focused on enhancing access to primary healthcare and social protection; addressing special vulnerabilities like gender and exclusion; and, strengthening the capacity of public social services systems to sustainably support the afore-named peoples. Anthony mostly focuses on implementation research which facilitates evidence-based healthcare, welfare and protection interventions. He has widely researched child poverty, child maltreatment (mainly child sexual abuse and marriage) and related policy responses in Zimbabwe. With Professor Vandna Sinha’s supervision, his PhD research will analyse primary healthcare services delivery for children in rural Zimbabwe using the child rights approach. The thesis will inform healthcare policies in Zimbabwe and sub-Saharan Africa to be child-centred/sensitive, and illuminate social work’s role in enhancing health access and rights among vulnerable and marginalized children.

At McGill, Anthony received the Graduate Excellence Fellowship, Mark and Mildred Goldenberg Fellowship in Social Work, and Manny Weiner Research Award. Elsewhere, he is also an OFID Annual Scholarship Award and Canon Collins University of London LLM Scholarship winner. As an Intercultural Leader, Community Solutions Program Fellow and UNAOC-EF Summer School Alumnus, he actively contributes to global, regional and national policy and decision-making processes on issues affecting children and young people. Anthony holds MSc degrees in Policy Research (University of Bristol, UK) and Development Studies (National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe), Bachelor of Social Work Honours Degree (University of Zimbabwe) and Postgraduate Diploma in Laws (University of London, UK). He is in the process of completing an LLM Master of Laws (University of London, UK) too.
