On September 20th McGill University was the successful organizer and host of the annual Medical Student Symposium. During this event, a "Prix de la relève en Médecine de famille" was awarded.

Created in 2013, the prize is awarded to a resident or a student that revealed his leadership skills. The 2014 winner is Dr Marc André Lavallée.

CIET/McGill Family Medicine training for government planners and researchers in Southern Africa

On September 3, 2014 St-Mary's researchers unveiled a "robot-doctor" that will not only be used during explorative spatial missions, but also on Earth.  It will be used in particular to help in the rapid diagnosis and prescription of the right treatment for the astronauts in orbit. It will aslo be of significant help in, amongst other things, reducing the congestion in walk-in clinics, in developing countries as well as in the treatment of chronic diseases.

In June, Dr. Isabelle Vedel was awarded the New Investigator Salary Award: Winter 2013 Priority Announcement - Community-based Primary Health Care - by the CIHR. This award that entails a contribution made to outstanding candidates that are conducting independent research, will go towards Dr. Vedel’s project on Alzheimer’s disease.

There was a high representation of students and faculty of Family Medicine in the newest issue of the graduate student journal, Health Science Inquiry. Congratulations to Cristina Longo, Doaa Farid and Hani Badran who were all reviewers along with Pierre Pluye. Alex Fletcher was a reporter for this issue and original submissions were published for Vladimir Khanassov, Maedeh Khayyat Kholghi (on the MSc program) and Emily Parkinson.

Peter Steinmetz works in the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal and is a Faculty Lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at McGill. He is the Director and Founder of the Undergraduate Bedside Ultrasound Course at McGill and has taught in North America, Asia and Africa.

Bedside Ultrasound, Level 1, by Peter Steinmetz is a great resource among students, residents and physicians alike. It contains and explores applications of ultrasound that transcend the common areas this form of medicine deals with.

The prize was established in 2006 by David Altshuler and the Altshuler family, in honour of his father, John Altshuler, BSc ’55, MDCM ’59. This prize is awarded annually by the Faculty of Medicine to a graduating medical student with the highest mark in the family medicine clerkship.

This year’s recipient, Douglas Slobod, received the award at the Dean’s Awards Ceremony and Reception on May 29.

The results from the Fonds de recherche Santé-Quebec (FRQS) have been announced and we would like to congratulate the members of our department who have been successful.  These competitions are very competitive and few are actually successful in obtaining these salary support awards.

Dr. Gillian Bartlett-Esquilant has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Carrie M. Derick Award for Excellence Graduate Teaching and Supervision. The Award and a citation will be presented at Spring Convocation. The recipient receives a plaque, and his/her name is inscribed on a permanent plaque in the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office.
