Securing Water for Future Food Production

Olanike Aladenola

01 Oct. 2009, 10:05-11:25, Raymond 2-046

Sustainable agricultural growth requires access to dependable and good quality water resources. In Canada agricultural water use ranks 4th among other water users but it is the highest consumer of water through irrigation. Increasing competition among water users and the pressure of climate variability and change is a major threat to food production. To ensure that food production is sustained, a framework for allocating water among users and to irrigation is essential. An overview of water use in Canada is provided and mechanism for irrigation water allocation and application is presented.

Xin Rui

01 Oct. 2009, 10:05-11:25, Raymond 2-046

Have you ever had the experience that your mouth feels a little bit burned when you are eating pineapple? That feeling is mainly due to the effect of the enzymes in pineapple -- bromelain. Bromelain is a group of proteolytic enzymes found in both the pineapple fruit and stem. Research shows that they have broad applications including meat tenderizing and diverse medical uses. This presentation will focus on the applications of bromelain. Meanwhile, the definition and their distribution, as well as production and commercial products of bromelain will also be introduced.
