Water advisory issued in six McGill buildings

Published: 9 August 2023

Original message was sent on July 27, 2023

Dear members of the McGill community,

This message is to inform you that routine water testing has indicated the presence of lead above the threshold set by the Government of Quebec in six McGill buildings:

  1. La Citadelle
  2. Carrefour Sherbrooke
  3. Elizabeth Wirth Music Building
  4. Ferrier
  5. Thomson House
  6. 3647 Peel (previously identified with measures already in place)

You should not drink the water nor use it for any form of food preparation or for brushing teeth. However, the water may be used for washing hands, dishes and showering.

Signage and potable water

McGill’s Student Housing and Hospitality Services distributed information to building occupants at La Citadelle and Carrefour Sherbrooke. Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS) notified building directors in the other four buildings and posted signage. FMAS has also delivered bottled water to the buildings.

Next steps and questions

The university is following up with the City of Montreal and the accredited lab that conducted the tests. It will undertake another round of testing early next week, with results expected thereafter. Further information will be shared as it is made available.

For those needing assistance with water in affected spaces, please email fcc.fod [at] mcgill.ca.

Sincerely,

Diana Dutton
