SSHRC Invests in Two New McGill Library Research Projects

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has poured research funding into two new research projects based out of the McGill library. In the Partnership Development Category, The Gwillim Project, led by Dr. Victoria Dickenson and based out of the Blacker Wood Collection will be forging new networks over the next three years. The Gwillim Project centres around the life and world of two sisters in early 19th century Madras (now Chennai), Elizabeth Gwillim and Mary Symonds. The multidisciplinary project will involve many collaborators from the McGill Library, the larger McGill research community, and partners worldwide. (Read more about the project)

In the Insight Development category, The Riddle Project, Food for Thought, led by Nathalie Cooke, Associate Dean of ROAAr, has received funding for the next two years. This project is interdisciplinary, bringing digital humanities methods to bear on a newly-identified sub-genre of riddles. The project will be working towards making this sub-genre – Enigmatic Bills of Fare - discoverable, accessible and much more widely understood. The project crowdsources solutions for riddles through social media.

SSHRC is supporting the research, publications, and engaging physical and virtual exhibitions that are sure to come from these multidisciplinary projects in the coming years. Congratulations to all the successful applicants!
