Catherine Mathieu awarded prestigious Vanier Scholarship

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that the Government of Canada has named DCL candidate Catherine Mathieu a 2019 Vanier Scholar.

Launched in 2008, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is one of Canada’s most prestigious awards for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Worth $50,000 per year for three years of study and research, it recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, or health-related disciplines.

Mathieu’s doctoral thesis is tentatively entitled Chevauchements et conflits entre les législations consuméristes fédérales et provinciales : l’impact du fédéralisme canadien sur la protection des droits des consommateurs. It will deepen our understanding of how Canadian federalism affects consumer protection.

Parallel to her doctoral studies, Catherine Mathieu practices at Woods LLP in Montreal, where she has worked on major cases relating to class actions, shareholder and contractual disputes, and administrative law. She has participated in the preparation of several cases heard before the Quebec Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada, where she also clerked for the former Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin. Recently, Mathieu’s work on constitutional initiatives won third place in the 2019 Baxter Family Competition on Federalism.
