Ramses Galaz, PhD, will be giving a guest lecture on how a low-cost ventilator was developed in Mexico as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Having given many conference talks and written various research papers on medical device designs, Ramses Galaz has currently received 36 patents on medical devices and 3 regulatory approvals on class II and class III medical devices.

Abstract of Talk:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there were numerous worldwide efforts to design and develop low-cost ventilators to treat patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome caused by the virus. Many developing countries were not prepared for these events as their health expenditure per capita is very low and they still rely on imported medical devices. In a joint effort in Mexico, a group of private companies, hospitals and universities developed a low-cost ventilator that became the first ever Emergency Use Authorization medical device approved by the Mexican regulatory agency COFEPRIS. The development of all the engineering and testing was done in under 14 weeks. To this date, more than 200 ventilators have been produced and have been distributed in Mexico and Caribbean countries.
