Love Green Chemistry and Art? Then the 3rd McGill Department of Chemistry “ChemPhoto” Photo Exhibition is for You!

Saturday, February 29, 2020
Maass Chemistry Building Lobby, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0B8, CA

For the last two years, the McGill Chemistry Outreach Group has been hosting ChemPhoto, a photography exhibition that coincides with Nuit Blanche. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase the beauty of science and to foster interest in chemistry to the general public. This chemistry-themed photo exhibition has attracted lots of enthusiastic attention from the general public: more than 1,500 people have visited our exhibition!

This year, the Chemistry Outreach Group is proud to launch the 3rd edition of “ChemPhoto”. The theme of this year’s exhibition is Green Chemistry. Enter the contest with a photo of your research and relate it to the principles of green chemistry. Don’t forget to accompany your image with a short and easy to understand description of your stunning photo so that the general public can share your joy!

Instructions

Who can participate: undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, and staff in the McGill Faculty of Science

How to participate:
Each participant can only submit one (digital copy) photo, which must be related to chemistry. The content should be easily understandable by the general public.

The deadline for submissions is February 23rd, 2019. Please download and complete the participation form and the media consent form available at the top right of this webpage. Then send both forms and your photo in jpg format (resolution no lower than 300 dpi) to outreach.chemistry [at] mcgill.ca.

Exhibition time and duration:
Suitable submissions will be displayed in the lobby of Otto Mass during Nuit Blanche on Saturday, February 29, 2020. At this time, winners will be selected by a public vote.

Photos will remain on display in the Otto Maass Building lobby until the 2021 ChemPhoto exhibition.

Voting Time:
6 pm – 12 am February 29 (at the same time as McGill Chemistry Outreach Nuit Blanche presentations), open to the general public. Only one vote per person.

Prizes:

Winners of ChemPhoto 2019

1st place: l'orange et le citron vert by Ehsan Hamzehpoor

Recently, a new class of organic room temperature phosphorescence (ORTP) molecules has been discovered by Perepichka lab. In this photo, one can see a TBu-TANGO molecule that emits different colors in different environments. Studying this phenomenon helps the researchers learn how to design variable environments to tune the desired colors out of the same molecule.

2nd place: First crystals of the spring by Sandra Kaabel

This photo was taken during a project investigating the connectivity of atoms in porous 3D framework materials, called metal-organic frameworks, and analysis of the trapped “cargo” within the pores. Although pretty, the crystallite on the photo is, in fact, quite a nightmare for a crystallographer. The particular flower-like shape reflects a heavily twinned structure, which turned out to be an insurmountable obstacle for a successful analysis by X-ray diffraction. This photo was captured using a phone camera, through the eyepiece of a microscope.

3rd place: Color from the Dark by Tianyu Zhong

Under a moderate magnetic field, 10-nanometer-sized magnetic iron oxide particles were allowed to assemble into these cone-like structures in a hexagonal array. The initial black pattern developed color bands around the bases of these “spikes” over a period of time.
