Robert is Executive Director, Education and Research at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetist (ANZCA). In his role he is responsible for training, assessment, accreditation and new programs within the anaesthesia program. He also provides oversight of the research foundation and the allocation of college funded research grants to fellows and trainees.
Previous appointments include the Clinical Education Fellows at the University of Melbourne Medical School, Professor and Director of the Health Simulation Centre (HSC) at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth and as the Director of Medical Education and Training at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne.
He holds both Doctoral and Master’s degrees in Education focusing on adult learning in the context of ongoing professional learning for educators. He has worked extensively in medical education and simulation development and has lead projects that developed simulation instructor programs that have utilised simulation to teach clinical and non-clinical skills.
He has undertaken extensive advisory work with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) on developing professional skills in surgical aspirants, trainees and fellows through a range of programs including TIPS and NOTSS. Robert was also the education lead for the Implementation of the Building Respect and Improving Patient Safety Project which has been initiated as a result of the extensive External Advisory Groups study into Bullying and Harassment in the Surgical Profession.
His major research and development interests are in improving outcomes in health through the use of non-technical skills training and developing professional skills for clinicians. He is interested in the professional identity of clinicians and the impact this has on a safety culture.
Robert was a previous Chair of the Australian Society for Simulation in Healthcare (ASSH) which part of Simulation Australasia, the peak body for simulation and modelling in Australia.
