About this event

Throughout Montreal’s history, many gatherings have highlighted the story of the city.

In his presentation, Kevin Stanley, Faculty Lecturer at the McGill University School of Continuing Studies, reminds us of The Great Peace, a major historical event in Montreal in 1701, and explains how the discussion of historical events, including those featured in the McCord exhibition All Together on McGill College Avenue, foster a favourable environment for learning.

In the “English for Professional Communication” program taught at the School of Continuing Studies, the story of Canada is told to newcomers and history is used to teach English. In this talk, discover how major gatherings in Montreal, including the Great Peace, can be taught to newcomers and help them learn English.

About Kevin Stanley

Kevin Stanley has been teaching English to newcomers and international students for over 30 years. He joined the SCS team in Languages and Intercultural Communication as a faculty lecturer and program coordinator in 2012. Passionate about history and culture, in 2018 he developed an intermediate-level course in the English for Professional Communication program called CEEN 267 – English Study Topics: The Story of Canada, which helps students sharpen their English language skills by exploring stories from Canadian history from the perspective of newcomers.
