First 2024 event of the Distinguished Professors Lecture Series: The adaptive beta cell by Dr. Vincent Poitout

Thursday, January 25, 2024 16:30to18:30

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre is delighted to invite you to first event of 2024 of the Distinguished Professors Lecture Series.

The pancreatic beta cell has the capacity to adapt to changes in its metabolic environment, for example when obesity- or aging-related insulin resistance develops, by increasing its functional mass. However, in some individuals this adaptive mechanism is defective, and type 2 diabetes ensues. Deciphering the cellular and molecular basis of beta-cell compensation to metabolic stress may provide insights into why and how it sometimes fails.

Dr. Vincent Poitout’s team has developed preclinical models to understand the beta-cell response to nutrient surfeit and insulin resistance. In recent studies, they characterized the beta-cell response to combined, elevated levels of glucose and fatty acids and to the transient insulin resistance associated with puberty.

A precise understanding of the mechanisms whereby the beta cell adapts to its metabolic environment might eventually help identify ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

This lecture will be in English. Questions will be welcome in both official languages.

The Distinguished Professors Lecture Series will generally take place in the Cruess Auditorium of the Glen site on the last Thursday of every month, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., followed by networking and light refreshments.

We encourage you to make every effort to join these special lectures.
