Expanding and Connecting Language Resources: Robust Vocabulary Instruction for Multilingual Adolescents

Amy Crosson, Ph.D. Pennsylvania State University

This lecture addresses two questions: (1) Why is it important for educators to provide robust vocabulary instruction for emergent multilingual learners, whether in clinical or classroom settings? And (2) What evidence-based intervention practices are effective for supporting development of flexible and deep word knowledge? Robust vocabulary instruction focuses on words that carry abstract meanings and appear in texts across academic content areas. For emergent multilinguals, vocabulary instruction should be infused with morphological analysis to enable students to problem-solve the meanings of unfamiliar words and make connections among semantic clusters of related words in English. At the same time, a critical component of this instructional approach is to encourage emergent multilinguals to leverage their full range of linguistic resources by making connections to their home languages.
