Making a difference with Science and Medicine

Dr. Wainberg has been both a Canadian and international leader. He has made multiple contributions to the field of HIV/AIDS, including a key role in the development of 3TC. Mark was the Scientific Director of the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research between 2000-2009. He was a key founder of the Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) and served as Chair of its first conference. He has been a member of numerous grants and awards committees both in Canada and abroad and is co-chair of the Scientific Review Committee of the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR). He is a long-standing Chair of the Réseau SIDA of the Fonds de Recherche du Quebec. Mark gives freely of his time and regularly speaks about HIV/AIDS to both local community groups and aboriginal groups who represent a high proportion of new HIV infections in Canada today. Mark continues to supervise graduate students, and many of his trainees now themselves occupy positions of leadership at universities in Canada and abroad.
