Geneviève Bois named finalist for Emerging Practitioner Award from the Collège des Médecins du Québec

Geneviève Bois, physician at the Department of Family Medicine’s Whapmagoostui clinic in James Bay, is named finalist for the Emerging Practitioner Award from the Collège des Médecins du Québec (CMQ). The overall winners will be announced during a ceremony on April 11, 2024.

The CMQ Award in the Emerging Practitioner category is given to a physician who has been in practice for less than 10 years and who has made a significant contribution in their community to the advancement of the medical practice.

The doctor who "moves mountains”

Thanks to Dr. Bois, women in remote areas have better access to reproductive health care. When she began her practice in 2017, Dr. Bois settled in Whapmagoostui, the northernmost Cree community in Eeyou Itschee, Northern Quebec. In recent years, Dr. Bois' commitment to Indigenous health and cultural safety has been evident as she has collaborated with Indigenous communities to improve training, including at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Medicine.

Highly involved in her community, Dr. Bois combines teaching and management responsibilities with her clinical activities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her efforts to prevent, contain and manage outbreaks was of crucial importance to her community.

"Dr. Geneviève Bois is an inspiration to her colleagues and embodies the best of the next generation through her extraordinary leadership and commitment."

Dr. Guillaume Groleau, Chief of Medicine, CMC Whapmagoostui

Advocating equity and social justice in all her actions, Dr. Bois campaigns for women's reproductive health rights. She defends the right to abortion and better access to reproductive health care throughout Quebec. When she's not up north, she's with patients at the Centre de santé des femmes de Montréal and the Clinique des femmes de l'Outaouais.

President-designate of the Board of Directors of the Collège québécois des médecins de famille, she has also been a member of the Choisir avec soin steering committee since its inception.

Recognized by her peers and her community as a force of nature, Dr. Geneviève Bois has been described as one who "moves mountains for her patients". Her committed leadership, courage and dedication make her a role model for her colleagues and a driving force for social change.
