Formulas of SzegÅ‘ type for the periodic Schrödinger operator.

In the 1980's H.J. Landau and H. Widom proved trace asymptotics for truncated Wiener-Hopf operators with piecewise continuous symbol, as the truncation parameter grows. We present an asymptotic trace formula for the periodic Schrödinger operator in dimension one, which may be seen as an extension of Landau and Widom's results. The subleading order of the asymptotics identifies the spectrum of the periodic Schrödinger operator. This is joint work with Alexander V. Sobolev.

Analytic torsion of locally symmetric spaces and the growth of torsion in the cohomology of arithmetic groups.

Analytic torsion is a spectral invariant of a Riemannian manifold defined in terms of regularized determinants of Laplace operators on forms twisted by a flat bundle. For locally symmetric spaces, it can be used to study the growth of the torsion subgroup of the cohomology of arithmetic groups for towers of congruence subgroups or special sequences of local systems of growing rank. I will review some of the recent results and discuss some open problems.

Peculiar modules for 4-ended tangles

A peculiar module is a certain algebraic invariant of 4-ended tangles that I developed in my PhD thesis as a tool for studying the local behaviour of Heegaard Floer homology for knots and links. I will briefly explain its construction and describe its classification in terms of immersed curves on a 4-punctured sphere as well as a glueing formula. Finally, I will discuss some applications, such as rational tangle detection, skein relations and mutation symmetries.

Some refinements of the embedding of critical Sobolev spaces into BMO

In 2004, Van Schaftinen showed that the inequalities established by Bourgain and Brezis give rise to new function spaces that refine the classical embedding $mathring{W}^{1,n}(mathbb{R}^n)subset m{BMO}(mathbb{R}^n)$. In this talk, we discuss the non-homogeneous analogs of these function spaces on $mathbb{R}^n$ and their generalizations to Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry.
