DESCRIPTION:The Neuro Film Series season finale will take place on Thursday
 \,\nMay 24 at 6:30 pm.  Iris is a 2001 biographical film that\ntells the s
 tory of British novelist Iris Murdoch and her\nrelationship with John Bayl
 ey. The film starkly shows the contrast\nbetween the start of their relati
 onship\, when Murdoch was an\noutgoing\, dominant individual as compared t
 o her timid and\nscholarly partner Bayley\, to their later life\, when Iri
 s begins\nexperiencing forgetfulness and dementia and is in fact suffering
 \nfrom Alzheimer's disease. Her devoted husband struggles with\nhopelessne
 ss and frustration to become her caretaker\, as his wife's\nmind deteriora
 tes from the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. Our\nNeuro host\, Dr. Edith H
 amel will discuss the film and current\nAlzheimer research and treatment.
 \n\nDr. Edith Hamel is a neuroscientist at the Montreal Neurological\nInst
 itute of McGill University.  Edith Hamel is\ninternationally renowned for 
 her innovative work in neuroscience\nwhich focuses on the regulation of ce
 rebral circulation. The goal\nof Dr. Hamel’s work is to understand how ner
 ve cells control\nregional blood flow in the brain and how this relationsh
 ip is\naltered in pathological states like Alzheimer's disease and\nmigrai
 ne headache. Through understanding of the mechanisms\ninvolved\, her resea
 rch could help in the development of new drugs\naimed at preserving a norm
 al blood supply to the brain or\ndecreasing vascular head pain.\n\nDiscove
