This pathway is also evident throughout the international community. A signific ant segment of Canada-oriented research and scholarship that takes place b eyond Canadian borders is undertaken by Canadian expats – i.e.\, Canadian citizens who as academics work on Canada-focused issues in nations around the world.\n\nWhile there are a number of critical challenges arising from spatial dislocation for Canadian academics who live and work abroad\, non e is more compelling than the corrosive impacts of authenticity. What exac tly is authenticity and how does it have corrosive impacts on the professi onal life of Canadian scholars living abroad? Are there strategies and act ions that Canadian ex-pats can embrace to effectively counter the challeng es of externality?\n\nIn considering these matters\, Professor Kirkey – an ex-pat academic who has resided in the United States for 37 years – will consider his professional journey\, the difficulties with authenticity he has encountered\, and the methods he has considered\, pursued\, and ultima tely adopted.\n\nChristopher Kirkey is Director of the Center for the Stud y of Canada and Institute on Quebec Studies at State University of New Yor k at Plattsburgh. A scholar of comparative foreign policy and internationa l relations theory\, he has been a professor at Bridgewater State Universi ty (1993-2001)\, Columbia University (2002-2012)\, and SUNY Plattsburgh (2 002-present). His most recent work is (with Richard Nimijean) The Construc tion of Canadian Identity from Abroad (2022\, Palgrave Macmillan). He has previously served as President of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States\, and the Middle Atlantic and New England Council on Can adian Studies.\n\nThis lecture is part of the BMP Rotating Lecture Program in Canadian Studies\, established in 2013 as a formal partnership among t he Canadian Studies programs of McGill University\, Bridgewater State Univ ersity and SUNY College at Plattsburgh. The Lectureship is designed to str engthen connections between the programs\, share expertise in the area of Canadian Studies\, and to expand audiences and interests in the field.\n\n This event will also be livestreamed: https://youtube.com/live/-5uNQE7MER8 \n DTSTART:20240522T200000Z DTEND:20240522T213000Z LOCATION:Leacock 232\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 85 5 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Death of a Canadian: The Corrosive Impacts of Authenticity URL:https://www.mcgill.ca/channels/channels/event/death-canadian-corrosive- impacts-authenticity-356718 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
