Language and Security: Translating in an Age of Terror - Dec. 6

Published: 5 November 2006

Language and security are the central themes which highlight many of the difficulties encountered in understanding and translating cultural concepts found in ideologically sensitive texts. Conference speakers will study a number of underlying cultural references in selected texts and explain their translatability when transferring meaning from source texts into French and/or English. Topics to be discussed range from ethics to the difficulties of translating in times and areas of military conflict. The speakers include language professionals from Canada, France and Lebanon.

Colloquium Committee: J. Archibald (McGill University), M. Guidère (Centre de recherche des Écoles de Coëtquidan, Université Lumière Lyon 2) and R. Mazen (Université Stendhal-Grenoble 3)
