These Schulich community members are basking in appointments and prizes this summer

Summer is in full swing! In addition to basking in the sun, several Schulich community members received prestigious appointments and competition prizes.

Frédéric-Alexandre Michaud, a doctoral candidate in orchestral conducting at Schulich, became a resident conductor and community ambassador at the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. In this position, he will be conducting, raising awareness about the symphony, and fostering partnerships in the community. Listen to his CBC Radio interview where he describes his role in detail.

Current and former students also won prizes in the Canadian Music Competition:

• Michelle Bawden, who graduated with her master's in music this year, won first prize in voice in the 19-25-year category
• Yan-Ru Chen, a current Schulich student, won third place in Piano in the 19–25-year category
• Jerome Chiasson, Jeanel Liang, Celina Morin, and Maya Enstad – all members of the Katarina String Quartet – won first place in Chamber Music in the 19-25-year category

Elisabeth Saint-Gelais (BMus’21, MMus’23), a Wirth Vocal Prize winner, recently won the $50,000 top prize at the Prix d’Europe -- one of many accolades she received this year. She talks about them in a recent Q&A with CBC Music.

Justin Saulnier won the Concours OMNI de l’Orchestre Métropolitain. This is his latest accomplishment in what’s turning out to be a busy year — he also won the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s Bursary Competition and McGill’s 2022-2023 Concerto Competition Award.

Ben Diamond, who graduated with his Master of Music this year, won third prize in the Domaine Forget Academy Guitar Competition.

Professor Dorian Bandy recently earned the title of William Dawson Scholar, a distinguished professorship at McGill, for his work in musicology. He recently conducted and co-produced the North American debut of a long-lost opera by renowned composer Joseph Haydn together with faculty of the University of Toronto.

Professor Robert Hasegawa, from the Department of Music Research, had his William Dawson Scholarship renewed. This distinction recognizes researchers of world-class calibre who are poised to become leaders in their fields.

Professor Steven Huebner, also the Department of Music Research, became a Distinguished James McGill Professor – an honour that recognizes his status as a world-class researcher and international leader in his field. His work covers a wide variety of methods and approaches, including studies in music sociology and politics, opera analysis and criticism, and reception history and edition making.
