Lara Khoury appointed as McGill’s new Associate Vice-President, Research

Research + Innovation (R+I) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Lara Khoury of the Faculty of Law as Associate Vice-President, Research (AVPR). Professor Khoury’s three-year term began on January 1, 2024. She succeeds Professor Debra Titone, Full Professor in the Department of Psychology and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Language & Multilingualism, who has served in the role of AVPR since 2021.

Me Khoury, Ad. E., is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Law and an Associate Member of McGill’s Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy of the School of Population and Global Health. She has previously served as an Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Law.

“I am excited for the wonderful opportunity to work with Vice-President Crago and the extraordinary team of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) office,” said Professor Khoury.

“As Associate Vice-Principal, Research, I hope that my long experience in undertaking research at the juncture of the social sciences and humanities and the health/science disciplines will benefit McGill as it continues to push the limits of its excellence in interdisciplinary global research. I also look forward to working with McGill’s amazing researchers, of all disciplines, and help them achieve their aspirations.”

As AVPR, Professor Khoury will help to develop proposals, special initiatives and projects that advance McGill’s research enterprise in the social sciences and humanities. Her responsibilities will also include working with the R+I teams that develop grants across a range of disciplines and with the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) on Canada Research Chair nominations and advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in research proposals. Additionally, she will oversee R+I’s prizes and awards portfolio, which generates and supports nominations for major national and international research prizes and awards. Professor Khoury will represent the Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation, on the university’s Statutory Selections Committee and she will serve on the Academic Planning Committee and provide oversight to the Research Ethics Board.

Thanks to outgoing AVPR, Debra Titone

During her tenure, Professor Debra Titone provided leadership across a variety of initiatives to further McGill’s research mission. This included the development and completion of McGill’s Institutional Research Data Management Strategy, the implementation of a SSHRC Connection Grant to deliver a series of workshops on Data Anonymization, and leadership of McGill’s participation in a SSHRC Connection Grant awarded to First Nations Information Governance Centre on Research Data Management.

In addition, Professor Titone led initiatives to track and enhance McGill-wide funding performance through in-depth institutional data analysis and to refine research ethics board processes and policies. She also worked with the Office of Sponsored Research to enhance NSERC Discovery Grant workshops and institutional performance.

Professor Titone also led special initiatives in EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion) across a variety of activities including oversight of institutional prizes and awards, the Beatty Lecture, working with McGill’s Equity Office to offer EDI workshops to faculties and units university-wide, and helping with the presentation of EDI in the preparation of a successful $165 million-dollar CFREF award, DNA to RNA (D2R).

R+I extends heartfelt appreciation to Professor Titone for her outstanding contributions to the university and for her dedication and leadership as AVPR.
