Julia Gersovitz and Andrew King appointed Professors of Practice

Julia Gersovitz and Andrew King have each been appointed as Professor of Practice at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture at McGill University. The Provost, Christopher Manfredi, confirmed both appointments as of September 1, 2019.

Gersovitz (B.Sc.(Arch.) 1974, B.Arch. 1975 [McGill], M.Sc. Historic Preservation 1980 [Columbia]) is one of Canada’s leading experts on heritage conservation. With over 40 years of experience in private practice, teaching, and design review commissions, she is recognized for her extensive contribution to the theory and practice of conservation. Her ability to reconcile conservation requirements with contemporary technological expectations has been demonstrated in award‐winning projects across Canada. One of the founding partners of EVOQ, Gersovitz works closely with the conservation team to provide strategic direction, design leadership, and quality control. She is a passionate advocate for heritage conservation in Canada and abroad. She is a member of various design review committees and has been an adjunct professor at McGill University since 1980. In 2015, Gersovitz was honoured with the Gabrielle Léger Medal by the National Trust for Canada for lifetime achievement in conservation in Canada. In 2018, she was named an Officer of the Order of Canada for her contribution to architecture and heritage conservation.

King (Bachelor of Environmental Design 1988, M.Arch. 1990 [Dalhousie]) currently leads the lemayLAB at lemay and is a Senior Partner with the firm in Montreal. He is leading lemay’s design strategies initiative, as well as projects in Montreal, Quebec, and across Canada. In 2018, his trans-disciplinary team, including artist Angela Silver, was awarded first place in the international design competition for Place de Montrealaises, to be completed in 2022. His Oratoire St. Joseph Carillon was recently awarded a 2017 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence and a 2018 AZ Award. He is spearheading design-led business development across Canada. King has been continuously involved in teaching design studio at various levels since 1988, and has contributed to studios in Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, Banff, London (UK), Berlin, Copenhagen, and Rome. This includes all levels of architectural studio development and delivery from first-year undergraduate to senior graduate studios, including interdisciplinary, integrated, comprehensive and speculative initiatives, and thesis supervision. King has held two of Canada’s most prestigious academic design chairs (Gerald Sheff Visiting Professor at McGill in 2012 and Azrieli Visiting Critic at Carleton in 2009-10).
