Dean's Introduction: Sustainability First

Published: 11 November 2022

Welcome to the first edition of the online Dean's Report. We will provide you with updates throughout the school year to keep you informed of what's happening on campus as students participate in newly developed programs, internships, and other opportunities made possible by alumni support.

Our goal is to keep you connected to the Faculty of Engineering and to the McGill community for many years to come. This issue is delivered to you as we plan for Homecoming 2022 October 19-22 - our first in-person homecoming gathering since 2019.

We are excited to have you join us, and I look forward to welcoming you back to campus at the Dean's Cocktail in the lobby of the Macdonald Engineering Building. This Fall, Professor David Theodore, new Director of the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture, will hold a breakfast for architecture alumni.

As we move out of lockdown and re-evaluate our priorities, one of the first items on my agenda is streamlining the print communications we send to you. McGill continues its drive towards building a culture of sustainability, and our Faculty plays a crucial role in being part of this change, both through our research, and through our daily operations. In response to your feedback, our previously printed materials will now be accessible online. In this issue:

Innovation by Design is a concept that was developed to give students a broader awareness of the society into which they will bring their technical skills. E-IDEA, Engine, Empower, and ELATE are all programs that focus on specific opportunities, where the emphasis is on experiential learning. Each of these E terms means something. Find out what.

Acrylic Robotics is one of McGill Engine's latest success stories. If you haven't heard about Engine, read how the Centre helps entrepreneurial engineers and designers test their ideas. Check out the video with founder, Chloe Ryan.

This spring we held our first in-person convocation in two years. I had the pleasure of attending three convocation ceremonies and personally congratulating our Class of 2022, as well as our graduating classes from 2020 and 2021 who travelled to Montreal for the postponed convocation events. Read about the 2022 Faculty of Engineering award recipients.

I look forward to seeing you at Homecoming, and to greeting you as we once again meet in person. We'll feature highlights of the event in a future issue.
