Panel on Religion Today

What do Canadians believe in, and what do young people believe in?

Whereas the past generation has successfully removed everything “religious” from public life (schools, universities, public services, etc.), a new generation of young people has emerged, that is increasingly interested in religion. And although they are much less institutionally associated and visible in public life, a recent poll of the Angus Reid Institute on religiosity in Canada shows that up to 80% of the people believe at least in something supernatural.

Is this a new trend not detected by policy makers and educational leaders? And if true, what should be the future role of religion in public life? This CREOR panel wants to present the results of the recent poll and discuss it among a team of experts.

The panel will be opened by the Reverend Christian Lépine, Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Montreal, after which the Angus Reid poll results will be presented and explained by Ray Pennings, Director of the Cardus Institute in Ottawa. Among the panelists are members of the various religious communities in Montreal, and the McGill Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, especially working in the field of the education of young people.
