Building Anti-Oppressive Residence Communities 12/15

In this workshop, participants from McGill Residences will receive an introduction to the concepts of oppression, anti-oppression, racism, and anti-racism. Learners will be asked to reflect on how intersecting oppressions impact their day-to-day, specifically within the context of McGill Residence and shared living. They will also explore how expressions of oppression manifest in policies, society, as well as on campus, especially within the structures of Housing and interpersonal interactions with roommates and floormates. They will also reflect on positionality and brainstorm how they may mobilize their privilege towards effective allyship to make Residence an anti-oppressive place.

Learning Objectives:

- Define oppression and racism, and anti-oppression and anti-racism, as well as related terminology

- Reflect on personal positionality and privilege

- Explore strategies to intervene into and undermine oppressions in Residence

- Critically engage with how oppression and racism can manifest on-campus and within Residence

IMPORTANT: Students must register with their official McGill email address in order for the registration to be valid.
